Critical love means having a sense of love and power within the classroom. Showing students the love while being the teacher is critical for running a smooth classroom and building those positive relationships with your students. Instilling a sense of power that’s somewhat equal for both students and teacher.

Critical love is building a loving relationship between the students and also showing the students the bright side of life. Whenever they walk into the classroom, they should feel excited to learn in a positive environment. As an ELL minor and a substitute paraeducator in Yakima, I have seen WAY to many MLL and newcomer students being marginalized and pushed in the back of the classroom, so emphasizing that they are just as important and expressing that you want them to be here is so important in the schools.

Critical love to me means having empathy for your students and creating a space built on trust to help students feel loved and cared for. Students who feel the genuine love from their teachers can hopefully learn in a way that allows them to be themselves without any embarrassment. Addressing your biases when teaching is essential to creating an environment safe and cared for.
