Equipment is essential in climbing because it keeps you safe, and helps you. For climbing, you need shoes, chalk, and a harness. These are the basic, necessary things you need to climb. I suggest getting your harness and shoes from REI. You should get chalk from a local climbing gym such as Gravity Vault. The harness lets the rope connect to you so you don't fall. If you don't tie in the rope the correct way, you might fall. Climbing shoes are made for only climbing and you should never use them otherwise, or else they will get ruined and that's about $100 down the drain. There are many different types of climbing shoes, some made for smearing, or hooking, or even crack climbing. Climbing chalk can help with taking the sweat away on your hands. Don't put too much chalk on your hands or they will be slippery and you can't climb that well. There are many different supplies in climbing, but these are just the basic.

Good techniques are crucial to getting up a wall most efficiently. Without good techniques, you will run out of energy quickly and sweat quickly. Some techniques are flagging, smearing, dyno, and good resting spots. Flagging is good for balance, or else you might do what's called a barn door. Smearing is good if there are no footholds, you place your foot on the wall and press out. Smearing is not good on an overhang, but good on slab. Dyno is short for dynamic move which means to jump or make a big move. Good resting spots are very important when climbing because if you continually climb for 3 hours without stopping, you WILL get tired. This is where flagging and smearing come in handy, because you will get sweaty on the wall and need to chalk up fast.
