1. Genetic Engineering
In the novel 'Juno of Taris' genetic engineering is used, this is the same in the film 'The Giver'. The novel 'Juno of Taris' uses genetic engineering to keep a good population rate. When one citizen dies, a chosen couple is able to produce a baby from the outside world. If you are a scientist you are aloud to reproduce the natural way although this isn't very common. This is similar to how genetic engineering is used in the film 'The Giver'. In the film 'The Giver genetic engineering is shown similarly on Taris, nurturers make different characteristics stand out to create a perfect citizen, this happens in the nurturing centre while on taris this occurs in the gene centre.

2. A Rebellious Protagonist
In both the film the 'The Giver' and the novel 'Juno of Taris' there is a rebellious figure whom rebels against the government/authority. In 'The Giver' the rebellious character is the main character, this is the same in the novel 'Juno of Taris' . The main character in the novel 'Juno of Taris' is Juno she is also one of the rebellious figures in the novel. While in 'The Giver' there is only one character that is a rebel, in Taris there are multiple major and minor characters that act as rebellious protagonists.

3. Isolated Communities
'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' are both set in an isolated community. 'The Giver' is set on a remote island that is separated from the rest of the world which has been damaged by 'the ruin'. 'Juno of Taris' is also set on a remote island however it has a protective dome around the outside to prevent citizens from escaping. On Taris ships were sent to the island containing goods however this stopped years ago as there was not enough money to keep funding the Taris project.

1. Government Authorities
In both 'the Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' they have Government authorities controlling the citizens and enforcing rules. There are the same government authorities and they do not change - citizens don't vote for governments. In Juno of Taris there are bad governments who blackmail citizens, killing people who challenge the laws which is exactly like 'the Giver' who also has a very controlling and overbearing government who lies, invades your privacy and kills people who also try to challenge the laws.

2. Genetic Engineering
In 'Juno of Taris' and 'the giver' genetic engineering happens with the process making the children. No one questions the actions of how natural birth is not allowed. In the giver they enhance characteristics and choose which baby is healthier to keep and give it to the correct family. In juno of Taris characteristics are enhanced as well as choosing the parents with the perfect characteristics of a Taris citizen.

3. Education
Education is enforced in both 'Juno of Taris' and 'the giver' to try and maintain a functioning society, so they have some knowledge. Although, they are not taught about history, or literature as that leaves too many possibilities for rebellion and the past being brought up as a main topic. 'Juno of Taris' and 'the giver' are the same as they have a strict timetable they have to follow for school, doing brief life skills.

1. Control of citizens
In both texts, 'Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver', the theme of control is shown quite promptly. We can see that in both texts, the Elders/Governance Companions have a lot of power over the people. They make the rules, they control the people's lives. On Taris however, the people have a bit more freedom in the sense that they get to choose what profession to follow. In 'The Giver', the people's jobs are chosen for them, whether they like it or not.
2. Genetic Engineering
On Taris, there is the idea of 'the perfect child', one that complies, comforms, behaves, doesn't speak against the laws and leaders... To make sure that this happens, there is a system where the parents of the child choose the traits of the baby. In 'The Giver', there they aren't exactly altering or enhancing the traits of the baby but instead, they have certain expectations. If the child is too light or isn't fit to stay, they are sent 'elsewhere'. If the child qualifies, they are put into a chosen family unit.
3. Laws, rules, curfews
Rules and curfews play a part in both texts. There are strict timetables set out for the citizen. No one goes out after dark, there is recreation time where everyone can relax and do the accepted things to do.

1. Dystopian Genre
A dystopia is an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad. Both 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' show the dystopian genre as each illustrates some of the same aspects of dystopian fiction such as having a totalitarian and mysterious government who are very secretive and unquestionable. Juno of Taris and The Giver similarly, are promoted as a 'utopia' through securing words by the governance companions.
2. Laws, rules & curfew
Both 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' have laws, rules and curfew, particularly those that control a citizens restriction of movement and strict time tables. In the novel Juno of Taris, citizens aren't allowed to do certain things such as grow their hair, leave the island and are forced to shave their hair fridays and go to meeting every wednesday. Similarly, the government in The Giver shows the same aspects during the film. Citizens aren't allowed outside of the 'walls' of the island and there are set times where they can do things. Both the Giver and Juno of Taris, demonstrate very similar values to do with rule, order and curfew.
3. Government/authority
Both societies in Juno of Taris and The Giver are ruled by a totalitarian government who are both very similar in the way the govern their society and have control over the citizens choices and restrict them from doing certain things. Examples:
The Giver:
- Government doesn't allow citizens to touch anyone outside of their family unit
- jobs are chosen for them
- need to take medication every morning

Juno of Taris:
- They have to marry someone from their learning stratum
- individuality is restricted
- only alowed to wear a standard set of clothes that are all the same
- Government promotes their society as a perfect utopia and use un-logical excuses to promote sameness and equality

1. Genetic engineering
Both the novel 'Juno of Taris' and the film 'The Giver' have a component of genetic engineering. In 'Juno of Taris' the citizens are selected to have a baby and when they are given permission they must choose the genes from people from the outside to have there baby, at the Gene Centre. They do this so the baby fits the perfect mould of the Tarisian baby. Similarly in 'The Giver' babies are kept at the Nurturing Centre where the babies have certain characteristics enhanced, so they better fit the mould of a perfect citizen of The Community. In The Community the lighter baby out of the two babies are sent to elsewhere, which is death. 'Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver' resemble closely in genetic engineering.

2. Dystopian genre
Dystopian genre is referred to a futuristic imagined world, that is bad and unpleasant. Both 'Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver' are a dystopian genre. They are both dystopian genres as freedom of speech and thought is restricted and citizen's individuality is restricted. In Juno of Taris citizens are required to wear the same clothes, have there heads shaved and also the citizens are not taught to read and write. Similarly, in The Giver citizens are also required to wear correct clothing, they receive no/very little education and certain words are bot allowed to be said. The Giver and Juno of Taris closely resemble each other as they show characteristics of a dystopian genre.
3. Government/authority
Both 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' have controlling government. In 'The Giver' the Elders control the community, however in 'Juno of Taris' the community is ran by the Governance Companions. The Elders from 'The Giver' and the Governance Companions in 'Juno of Taris' closely resemble each other as they are well trust by the citizens of the two communities and are thought to be guiding the communities in the correct manner. Both the Elders and the Governance Companions have secrets that they hide from the community, even though it is thought that they never lie. The Elders hide colour and memories of the past from the citizens of the community in 'The Giver,' likewise the Governance Companions hide the true history from the citizens of Taris. In the same manner 'Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver' both have controlling governments.

For example in Juno of Taris, Juno and others all agree not to shave their heads which is going against the Governance Companions. This also happens in The Giver as Jonas rebels against the Elders rules with by lying to them and breaking the curfews.
2. control of citizens
Control over the citizens are shown in both 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' as all citizens have an over controlling government. Each dystopian story shows an over controlling government as in The Giver they have their jobs chosen for them and very strict curfews. Same goes with Juno of Taris having to shave their heads each week and learning in different learning stratums.
3. laws, rules, curfews
Laws, rules and curfews are very strict in both "Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver' as they have set time tables for each day and punishments if not obeyed.

They have certain temperatures which are constantly the same. In the Giver they demonstrate the perfect weather; no rain, no snow, no freezing cold weather or no stinking hot weather. It is always set at the 'perfect temperature'. On the contrary, 'Juno of Taris' does have some rain, the weather too is perfect and set.
2. The difference though is that in 'The Giver' the heaviest child is chosen, in 'Juno of Taris' their traits are chosen. In contrary, in 'Juno of Taris' they volunteer to have a kid and then get hand picked to do it.

1. Isolated communities
"The Giver" and "Juno of Taris" are both set in isolated communities. These communities are similar as they both are selective about the people living in there, they both refer to other places as "The Outside" and they run their communities using their own resources. Though, The Community (in "The Giver"), is seemingly stricter than Taris, in terms of who is accepted into this isolated community.

2. Jobs/occupations
The occupations available in Taris and The Community are similar as they are targeted at ensuring survival within their respective community. However, in regards to choosing (or lack of choice) the occupations, The Elders choose occupations for citizens of The Community, while the learning stratums of Taris are offered an apprenticeship and have some (but limited) choice in their roles.

3. Control of citizens
The theme of control is used in "The Giver" and "Juno of Taris" alike. Both governments display control over its citizen's in both minor and major ways. Examples of control include implementing curfews and controlling education. One major difference between the two novels is the appearance of characters. Although both governments are strict about clothing and other features, The Elders of The Community allow them to keep their hair, unlike the Governance Companions of Taris. This is an evident example of "control" throughout "Juno of Taris".

1) Control of citizens
In Both 'Juno of Taris' and 'The giver' the government has complete control over the citizens lives. This is displayed through each of the individuals in both texts being told what to wear, how to act and what their appearance should be. In 'juno of Taris' the people are forced to have their heads shaven and wear nothing other than their tunics and similarly in 'The Giver the people have to wear there assigned clothing however they are allowed to grow their hair.

2) A rebellious protagonist
Both 'Juno of Taris' and 'The Giver' there is a rebellious protagonist who is different from everybody else in the society and who's motives are to bring change within the society. For example in 'Juno of Taris' everyone is to dress a certain way, shave their heads and comply to whatever the Governance companions say. Juno however wishes to grow her hair and wear what she wants, and works to bring freedom into Taris with the help of some friends. Similarly When Jonas finds out the truth to the world as he receives memories of the past from the Giver, he works to bring memories back to everyone and remove sameness for good.

3) The dystopian genre
Both 'Juno of Taris' and the 'Giver' are both texts that are of the Dystopian genre. This is because both of the texts are controlled by an overbearing government, the citizens are under constant surveillance in Juno's case through gossip, and in Jonas's case, cameras. The communities are also made to cover the distress and destruction of the outside world, for example in 'Juno of taris' it was because of war and famine and in 'the Giver' it was because of war.

1. Government Authorities:
Both 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' have similar totalitarian governments. The Elders in 'The Giver' closely resemble the Governance Companions (GCs) in 'Juno of Taris.' The GCs are a committee of community members, and are incredibly well-respected and trusted; it is believed by all that they would never lie, and the Elders are treated in the same respect. The Elders and the GCs also have secrets that they hide; whether it be the community's true history, like in 'Juno of Taris', or things like colour and memory, like in 'The Giver', the governmental systems are built on fraud.
2. Communal Meetings:
The tri-weekly communal meetings of Taris were very similar to the regular meetings of the Community. The communities all had to come together to discuss anything the Governmental System deemed necessary. However, in Taris they discussed issues of the community and watched films to receive education whereas the people of Jonas' Community went to the meetings to partake in formal proceedings, like Ceremony of Loss.
3. Family Structure:
The family structure in 'The Giver' and 'Juno of Taris' are very similar. Parents are assigned children, and may only have two, but the gender of these kids in 'The Giver' can only be one boy and one girl. As well as this, in 'The Giver', children are born through the Birth Mothers, whereas in 'Juno of Taris', the egg is put into the actual mother and births it naturally. Parents are assigned to each other in 'The Giver', yet in 'Juno of Taris, they 'choose' themselves - this term is kind of loose, as they are only allowed to marry within their learning stratum, and they are all promised off to eachother.

The control of citizens in 'The giver' is that everyone is being watched by the elders and always being supervised to make sure they don't go against the rules they are supposed to follow.
2.

Control over citizens-
Control in The Giver and in Juno of Taris are mentioned a lot as it one of the major themes in both novels. In both the Giver and Juno of Taris they made sure nobody would see colour as if they saw colour they have emotions they would also take away there memories as they didn't want anyone to remember anything about the past. In the Giver they have elders who watch over everything they do or say. As in the the Giver every time every one says something that has to many emotions they will say 'Preseason of language.' Likewise both texts the government controls the city. As in Juno of Taris everyone on Taris has to shave there head and has to show compliance's. In both novels the government controls everyone in the community and makes all the rules for everyone to follow.

Education-
The education on The Giver and Juno of Taris is similar is some ways but does have some differences. Schooling on Taris and the Giver is both compulsory. On Taris they are in learning stratums and they stay with the same people until they finish school. As in the Giver they are in school wih the same people who are the sane age as them. Once they turn 16 they are given a job in society by the elders and then they are not with the same people and they still can be friends but not in the same group as them.

Meeting as a community-
In both texts they have lots of city council meetings were they both discuss local issues that are going on in the community.
