The theme of the story is one's own revenge and hatred feelings always leads them into their own destiny. Because the husband in the story was always hate his wife's growth through out the story. Finally his negative feelings led his own downfall.

I think the theme of the story is about how hatred will always lead you down a worse path. It's obvious that the couple hates each other and has thoughts of killing each other; but the man has more intense urges, while the woman silently plots her deadly victory. This goes to show that hatred will get you nowhere and how in some cases, it can lead into suffering and maybe even physical altercations.

I think the theme of the story is about jealously because the husband is always jealous of his wife winning the game. Another reason why I think the theme is about jealously because his negative feelings got the best of himself.
