On my previous teaching practice experience, learners were unruly and had no respect for my mentor teacher. As time passed, the discipline issues escalated and learners started physically fighting on a regular basis. This put not only their safety at risk, but everyone else surrounding them also at risk.

I feel that corporal punishment can be used as a temporary disciplinary measure to combat the current crisis teachers find themselves in. I do however believe that checks and balances have to be put in place to prevent extreme measures from occurring. Teachers rights have to be re-evaluated as there seems to be a lack of authority in a majority of South African schools. In fact, there are many other ways that discipline issues can be dealt with. As a future teacher I am worried about the state of our schools.

Many other people have taken to social media to voice their opinion and unity against #teacherabuse in South Africa. It is clear that our teachers are facing a crisis. This study was conducted after corporal punishment was banned. Teachers who taught prior to the abolishment of corporal punishment were interviewed. 

They now describe teachers as disempowered and despondent.
