Beginning

The revolution starts with a class system- the Estates General. This splits the people up into three classes: the First Estate (Clergy/Church officials; 1% of population), The Second Estate (Nobles; 10% of population), and the Third Estate (Commoners; 89% of population). Each estate was represented by one vote. This system was unfair, as only the Third Estate was required to pay taxes, which was most of their salary. So with barely any money, they couldn’t own much land or feed themselves, resorting to eating sawdust bread. In May, there was a meeting for the estates to talk about their issues using the cashiers. The Third Estate wanted the other estates to start paying taxes as well, but the other two estates weren't used to paying taxes, so they wouldn't like this idea. Keep in mind that the king, Louis XVI, is a very weak and indecisive king, who lets the First and Second Estate walk all over him. There was a voting problem, however, and the Third Estate was outvoted by 2:1, so they wanted a representation based on population to make it more fair for them- The National Assembly. At the National Assembly, the Third Estate was locked out, so they gathered at a tennis court and took the Tennis Court Oath. The Tennis Court Oath was a promise to not leave the court until there was a constitution in place for them; a protest. The king relents.

The Third Estate was determined to be treated equally. When they started to fear that the National Assembly would dissolve, they decided to Storm the Bastille in July, 1789. They did this because they also felt that their rights were being attacked by King Louis XVI. This allowed the political prisoners to be freed and they were able to gain weapons from the armory. In October of 1789, women marched on the Palace of Versailles. They were angry over the price of bread, and believed that the king and queen were hoarding all of the wheat and flour, which is reasonable because the king didn’t do anything about the starving 89%, when he was supposed to keep himself AND the people happy, so he failed. This heavily placed the blame on Marie Antoinette, for spending too much money on herself. King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, are executed for treason due to the neglect of people and attempting to do a counter revolution against the people. Robespierre then comes into power, starting the First Republic and Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a period of time when the guillotine would be used to kill anyone who spoke against the revolution. Originally, he was supposed to represent the people, but once he gained too much power, he became more of a dictator, killing 70,000 people by the Guillotine. The Reign of Terror would only end once Robespierre was killed by the guillotine.

The Directory consisted of an upper and lower house. The lower house would create legislatives for the government, while the upper house would accept or veto the proposals. Napoleon, a military genius, would then stage a coup d’etat to overthrow the Directory government. This allowed him to rise in power, which would then be an advantage for France. Napoleon created Napoleonic codes, which simplified the laws. He also allowed religious tolerance, and restored a centralized government for France. To reduce conflict, he eliminated the Estate System. Thanks to Napoleon, the relationship with the Pope was improved, and education was reformed. Lastly, he sold territory in North America to the U.S. to help fund campaigns, which helped stabilize France’s economy. Napoleon’s legacy was France’s domination of Continental Europe. His family ruled the conquered nations; he even made his brother King of Spain.
