Throughout his soul searching and subsequent descent into despair, the novel muses upon major motifs, one of the most important being lying and its effects. He claims it comes in handy in situations he can get away with lying. He says, "I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life."
Page 59 - Holden is talking to the mother of Earnest Morrow, a classmate of his. He says that all of his classmates wanted him to run for class president. He talked about his popularity much higher than what it actually was.
Page 110 - When Holden was talking to the nuns he gave them 10 dollars and he told them he had "quite a bit of money." Anyone who has read the novel knows Holden doesn't have much, It is easy for him to lie to gullible people and people whom he doesn't really know because he knows they will believe it.
Page 125 - When Holden went home after being kicked out of school he tells his sister that they let them out early. She already knew he had gotten kicked out and knew he was lying. Phoebe questions him, but he doesn't get mad because he cares about her opinion.
Chapter 13 - When Holden was n New York , he went to a club, he lied about his age to get in. He obviously did not look the age he said he was because security questioned him.

Through out the entire story Holden lies, to cover up his inner feelings, and reality. It shows how Holden is a superficial character  in a way, because he calls others phonies but he also the one that lies through out the entire book. He is not a very reliable narrotor because of the fact that he lies to others so much in the book, and reveals everyone but his own truth. Holden is afraid of adult hood and tries to hide from the fact that audlt hood is coming for him. The novel starts off with him explaining a situation in which Holden loses a fencing tournament for his team by leaving all of their equipment on the bus, which he goes on to say he finds funny. It is clear that he doesn’t. In the next chapter Holden explains that he is a pathological liar and that he doesn't know why. He frequently lies about his identity, age and intention throughout the novel. It appears to be a crutch for him in situations that he finds uncomfortable or in which he is feeling emotional.

    Phoebe- Holden’s little sister serves as a foil to Holden. While she is young (8ish?), she is wise beyond her years. She is the only one in the novel who consistently sees through his lies and forces him to be honest with her and himself.

    Maurice- A minor character in the novel. He is a pimp who lies to Holden about the price of a prostitute and causes a physical confrontation over it. This is one of the few times in the novel that lying leads to physical harm for any character.

    “Phonies”- This is the term Holden gives to the vast majority of people he runs across throughout the novel. It is essentially anyone who Holden sees as living a lie. This label is meant to be ironic as Holden frequently engages in the same type of behaviors that cause him to label others as phony.
