Connected, but Alone?

Sherry Turkle, I couldn't help myself but be engrossed on the things she had said in her talk entitled "Connected, but Alone?" It was all about how mobile phone establishes a connection that came to a point that we forgot the essence of being together with our friends and family.

I agree with Sherry when she said that our little devices, those little devices in our pockets are so psychologically powerful that they not only change what we do, they change who we are. Our smartphones are indeed powerful. Powerful enough that can make us someone who we should not and to have attitudes and behaviors we shouldn't possess. We became lazy and irresponsible. We tend to prioritize Facebook, YouTube, Mobile games rather than studying, rather than talking and listening with our family and friends. Rather than to have a real conversation with them.

Another claim that strikes me was this, "I share therefore I am. We used to define ourselves by sharing our thoughts and feelings even as we're having them". True enough. People nowadays prefer to define who they are, and to express their thoughts by posting and by clicking "share". Honestly, I am not fond of posting pictures of me especially solo nor posting what's on my mind, my anger, irritation, and happiness. You can check my Facebook account if you like. It's not that I have issues or what, I just don't like doing it. I prefer to have a conversation with my friends and ask for advice from them. Who we are does not rely on the comments in our photo online. How beautiful we are do not depend in the number of likes, or hearts in our profile. Isn't it better to hear compliments in personal? To define ourselves needs self-reflection.

Mobile phone, technology in general, is made for us to have a better lifestyle. It helps us in a lot of ways. For communication, entertainment, and education. We should not sacrifice real conversation that establishes a good relation to a mere connection. Everyone, let us not depend on texting, on emails but let us promote a talk and listen way of connecting to one another.
