Formally called the Old Order Amish, the Amish community is a distinctive Christian subculture. Often known for their rejection of most of the social change and technological innovation found in modern society. The Amish community is morally committed to their beliefs and church rules. The community considers life a spiritual activity and religious beliefs are displayed through daily actions.

Amish Involvement in Mainstream Society

If you've never been to Clare, Michigan, there is a small Amish community living there. The reason I chose to write about the Amish subculture is because my family has met the community and we have bought a handmade shed from them before. The Amish are known for simple living, modest clothing, and a slowness to adopt many conveniences of modern technology, with a view neither to interrupt family time, nor replace face to face conversations whenever possible. Their way of living leaves them isolated from mainstream society.

What Problem Are They Up Against?

As the Amish Community keep themselves closed off and reserved from mainstream society, they are hesitant with exposing themselves to new technology, and just don't want to. Electricity, television and automobiles are considered to be a temptation that could cause vanity, create inequality or lead the Amish away from their close knit communities. Exclusion of technology means exclusion of technology in all aspects, including the medical field. The Amish religion does not restrict members from seeking modern healthcare when necessary, but the access is more limited. Given that the Amish are economical in their lifestyle choices, they often turn to friends or family for advice and natural remedies before seeking medical attention. The isolation from modern medicine and the hesitation to use healthcare facilities can be hazardous to the community and puts them at a significantly higher health risk for certain conditions. The community also believes that God is the ultimate healer, trying everything natural before turning to medicine. These beliefs can lead to undiagnosed issues and untreated problems.

Why Should we Care?

Mainstream society has everything at the tips of their fingertips. It is much easier for us to get things we need or want in comparison to those in the Amish community. The Amish community statistically has less medical emergencies than the average American, but when they do, they struggle to turn to emergency medicine and often go with holistic natural methods. It is difficult for the community when a medical emergency occurs because they don't have insurance, so everything they pay for is in cash, often with help from the church. In the case of an emergency no community should not have to worry about their religious beliefs being violated or worry about the outrageous prices of American Healthcare. There are certain hospitals in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania that accommodate to Amish patients. All hospitals should have accommodations to respect different religions and be easily accessible to all communities.

Make hospitals and healthcare facilities more easily accessible to the Amish communities. Ways we can do this is putting heath care facilities near the communities that respect and accommodate to their Amish patients. The Amish communities can be more susceptible to genetic disorders and should be checked out to keep members of these communities as healthy as possible.

Attached is a link discussing the altered health risks within the Amish community.

The Amish community does not have much money and often leans on the church for medical emergencies to emphasize the importance of being able to lean on the shoulder of those within the community. In order for the communities to be closer access to healthcare facilities, they will likely need government assistance in some way. The government will need funding to put hospitals in closer distance of these communities. The facilities and clinics put near these communities should also respect religious morals.
