Battle of Iwo Jima

In thirty-six days of fighting on the island, nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20,000 were wounded. Marines captured 216 Imperial Army Japanese soldiers and many Japanese soldiers were killed in battle. The island was finally declared secured on March 26, 1945.

Battle of Okinawa

The Battle of Okinawa was a 3 month long war and led to the deaths of more than 12,500 men with around 49,000 injuries. Japanese kamikazes were a huge part of this war and led to the deaths of many Japanese soldiers.

Germany and the Soviet Union sign the Nazi-Soviet Pact

This Pact was a ten year long agreement to be neutral between two previous enemies. It mapped out their plan to invade Poland in September. Hitler ended up violating the pact about two years later when he invaded the Soviet Union.

This is what officially started WWll. Hitler had already conquered Austria, the Sudetenland, and Czechoslovakia and his next target was Poland. This is when he violated the Nazi-Soviet Pact. Hitler planned a surprise attack against Poland. HIs message to his soldiers prior to attacking was that their goal was to destroy the enemy. Anyone of Poland descent was to be killed (men, women, and children) without pity. Hitler wanted to make it look as though the Poles had provoked the whole battle. Germany ended up conquering Poland.

Japan gains control over the Philippines

By August of 1941 the Japanese Troops took over the Philippines, the Indochina, and Singapore. These places would not be liberated from the Axis Powers for another 2 years. However there was lots of resistances from the Filipinos against the Japanese in that 2 years.

The Imperial Japanese Army forces Filipino and American prisoners of war to march 60 tortured-filled miles. Captives were shot, bayoneted beaten to death, and often beheaded. Many of these soldiers that made it to the camps soon died of starvation and disease.

However, the U.S. managed to destroy the Japan’s first line carrying strength and navel pilots. A critical point in America's victory as it stopped the growth of the Japanese army.

Operation Overload D-Day

On the 6th of June in 1944, over 160,000 men of the Allied forces landed troops on Normandy beaches for the largest navel assault in history. It had five navel divisions and they all essentially stormed the beach. They were there to liberate the area of Nazis, this was the attack that made former President Eisenhower, then a general, more famous than he already was.

Yalta Conference

This Conference took place in Russia from February 4 thru the 11th. The Allies discussed the conditions under which the USSR would enter war against Japan. And it was also to discuss the postwar reorganization of Germany and the rest of Europe.
