There are federal and state laws in place that ensures healthcare access to patients that speak a language other than English. My Accessible Real Time Trusted Interpreter or MARTTI is a device created by the Language Access Network that allows communication between healthcare providers and their patients that speak a different language. MARTTI was created to help bridge the language barrier in healthcare. MARTTI consists of a total of 150 different languages and dialects and the system links healthcare workers to trained interpreters that are available with the click of a button 24 hours a day and seven days a week. MARTTI also provides communication for the hearing impaired with trained sign language interpreters. MARTTI looks like a flat screen and be accessed with the click of a button. The system does not require memorization of phone numbers or codes. When the program is powered on it connects the patient, healthcare worker, and the interpreter via video chat. In an article by Greisman (2011), it is stated that the cost for MARTTI for two years is about 180,000 dollars. The growth of healthcare informatics makes MARTTI possible and it contributes positively to provider knowledge and patient satisfaction.

I have worked at a facility where we used a language line on a cordless phone. It was a hassle to use, because sometimes the phone would not get good reception in patient rooms and it was difficult to remember the number and tedious listening to prompts to get to the language we needed.  Healthcare is constantly evolving and is meant to encompass everyone.
