Purpose of School

I used to believe that the purpose of school was to learn educational basics such as reading and math in order to prepare students for the basic skills needed to get a job and become a functional member of society. I still believe that school does contribute to this purpose. However, I now understand that school is meant to help students with self-discovery and preparation for whatever it is that they are meant to do with their lives.

Decisions on what the Students Should Learn

The decision on what students should learn should be negotiated by a variety of stakeholders. The federal government should propose a set of common guidelines that states should strive to meet in order to exceed the educational needs of the country. The state department of education and local districts should have more authority over the guidelines that best fit their community. Parents, teachers, students, and members of the community should also contribute to the discussion in order to determine the specific needs of that school or district.

Curriculum is both a set of academic guidelines as well as learned experiences that students will encounter in the learned environment. There are many layers to consider in the development of a curriculum. The federal government is able to ascertain proven research methods that help guide appropriate curriculum for the country. This, as well as local research, should be considered when developing a curriculum. Stakeholders should come together to propose what the students should understand and experience in order to become well-rounded members of the community.

Different Curriculum for Different Students

I believe certain communities and districts should be able to create a curriculum that meets the students where they are at and meets the needs of that community. The general guidelines should be fairly similar while allowing for creative changes that meet the needs of individual students. For instance, students from a lower socioeconomic status will have different interests and experiences than those of a higher socioeconomic status. The curriculum should be modified to address those needs while still allowing the students to obtain a similar overall education.

School counselors are able to meet with students and learn about what troubles them or what they wish they could obtain from their formal education. School counselors can use the information obtained from students in order to contribute to the design or modification of the district curriculum. School counselors can also meet with parents and teachers (before any formal school board meetings) to discuss what they have learned about the students and ways in which they can address their individual needs.

What I have done, and will continue to do as a school counselor, is work with students in order to determine how to address their academic, social, and personal needs. Honest feedback from students and parents help educators determine what is lacking in the current school environment and what can be changed. I will make sure to use my voice in order to advocate for their needs whether it be during collaboration or meetings with teachers or in a formal meeting environment.
