ECO certification is an ecolabel given out by the Malta Tourism Authority to hotels on the islands of Malta. Approximately 15% of hotels on the Maltese Islands are ECO certified translating to almost 30% of hotel rooms.

To participate, hotels must comply with a number of criteria all aimed at improving their environmental performance and increasing environmental awareness amongst employees.

There are several focus areas including energy efficiency, reducing water consumption, waste management and green procurement. The scheme also aims to increase environmental awareness amongst employees as well as hotel guests.  

‘Green’ operations will result in higher profitability for the hotel thanks to lower energy and water consumption, waste reduction, reduction of purchasing costs, etc. 

Eco-certified hotels are awarded a certificate and glass plaque carrying the Eco-certification logo.

In order to obtain ECO certification, hotels must satisfy all the mandatory criteria as well as 50% of the voluntary criteria. 

ECO certified hotels are awarded a certificate and glass plaque carrying the ECO certification logo. These are usually displayed prominently in the hotel lobby. Hotels may also use the ECO certification logo in their printed and electronic material, especially the hotel website. 
The hotel will also benefit from increased customer satisfaction, given that the environmental awareness of travellers is increasing. Research conducted by the Malta Tourism Authority (2009) shows that almost one person out of every two tourists interviewed expressed high levels of importance to environmental issues when booking accommodation, while almost 57% would be willing to pay an average of 8% more for a ‘green' hotel.

Our ECO certification has been recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The criteria of ECO certification in Malta was updated in 2008, 2012 and was also updated again in 2019.

The new criteria follows  a shift that is both based on a sustainable scheme and also an environmental scheme. The main points of this current criteria are about the sustainability managment, the waste system, water, energy, purchasing, air quality, control of chemicals, green areas and buildings, noise, economy, health and safety, culture and communication with customers.

It is good to become ECO-certified because you can have benefits like lower energy and water consumption and you can also help by reducing their impact on the environment.

2 ECO-certified hotels in Malta are:
- the Grand Hotel Excelsior which is located in Floriana

Today, the Eco certification scheme represents over 17% of hotel accommodation (22 hotels in total) in the 5/4/3 star hotels as well as 7 farmhouses located in Gozo.

On launching a new criteria, free training was given to all participating and the hotels who applied,  This was seen as a good first step to get various persons, representing different departments, on board and receptive to the scheme. 

Being an ECO certified is good because you get advantages such as water consumption, lower energy and it helps the enviroment.

It's also planned that in the future hopefully more hotels and farmhouses will follow this scheme, to help the environment and the future.

The new criteria follows 2 schemes. The sustainable scheme and the environmental  scheme.
The main areas covered by this current criteria are: Sustainability management systems,Waste management, purchasing, energy, water, air quality, control of chemicals, buildings, noise, green areas, local culture, national surroundings and also communication with the customers.


It is good to become Eco certified  because you cane have benefits. Eg: Water consumption and lower energy.
