MY FAVORITE SONG: Tuomas Holopainen - A Lifetime of Adventure

It's hard to describe how much I love this song. The song is one of those that makes me feel nostalgic without directly me to a specific time in my life. It also gives me both feelings of sadness and happiness. I reflect on the more depressing moments in my life while also being inspired to better my future. Altogether, the song presents a great combination, with the soothing and haunting voice of the female lead and the overall melodramatic and somber tone of the instrumentals.

"The desire for maximum individual artistic control and autonomy is understandable from a certain cultural perspective, but it is hardly universal (Turino 83).

As an artist myself, in a different field, studio art, I understand the desire to have full control over the artwork that you produce. I can't imagine letting someone else taking artistic control of something that is going to have my name on it. However, music is very different and it is rare that a single artist completely writes, produces, and sings their own songs.

Music and dance is universal in the sense that it is celebrated in some one or another across all cultures. Concerts or music productions bring people together for a mutual enjoyment. I am a avid fan of theatre and live musicals, though I have not had the chance to see many in my lifetime. Lion King is one of the few that I have seen.
(Image from http://www.lionking.com/)

It's inspirational without having any words to explain why you need to be motivated. It's her amazing skills on the violin that translate this emotion to you.

Sia is a musical artist that I have enjoyed for a very long time. Whether her songs are emotional and sad or just pure fun, they impact you. She has such a powerful voice and matched with the enchanting lyrics of her songs, it's incredible. Her pop music, even when happy and upbeat, is not the typical bubblegum pop that we are used to seeing with musical artist. She is unique and her music creates an impact.
(Image from https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/hear-sias-sweeping-new-wonder-woman-anthem-to-be-human-w484209)

Like most people in the world, music has a great effect on my life. I listen to it everyday. While I'm in the car on my way to school or work, or while I'm at home relaxing, or when I'm out with friends having fun. The music that affects me the most are the songs that create an emotional response within me. I love it when a song makes me feel both happy and sad at the same time. Though they might seem like conflicting emotions, I have learned over time that they are very connected as you can't have one without the other. Overall music provides an emotional escape for me at times. It can improve my mood, or decrease it. It can make me excited or depressed. There is such a range with music and its effects on us are never ending.

Rather, just some kind of relation that affects me enough to alter my emotional state at the time, whether in a small or large way.
(Image from https://crew.co/blog/hard-decisions-easy/)

Cultural Cohorts

It's hard to know exactly why you like certain things sometimes. I like a lot of somber music. Does that mean I'm a sad person? I'd like to think I'm not, at least not the majority of the time. I do think that a person's cultural cohorts effect their music tastes to some extent though. For example, I am a studio artist and so I have a great appreciation for the more artsy and inventive music out there. I also love movies and so songs that have been in a film that I love will most likely be big hits with me. However, there are other factors of my cultural cohorts that don't relate to my music taste. I am southern yet country music is not something I actively listen to. However, on the other hand, I probably like country more than people from the north do. In the end, it's difficult to point out specific factors that affect your music tastes and I think the majority of them are subconscious and not directly reflected in your everyday habits.
