Your mental health is most likely effected by the dynamic of your surroundings. The textbook stated, "When parents become depressed, angry, and sullen with one another and have increased conflict, the result is often harsh and inconsistent parenting or withdrawal. For adolescents, that can mean increases in risky behavior and less development of the sorts of competencies that protect them from those risks ," (3). It also mentions, "High levels of family conflict and poor communication skills disrupt parenting and family relations, reduce children’s emotional security, and reinforce the use of aggression and interpersonal hostility," (3). Family should be a place of security and a refuge, somewhere where you feel safe.

As far as peers are concerned, the textbook stated, "Adolescents are quite likely to emulate the behavior of popular peers," (3). If someone values something, then they see a 'popular' person going against that, they may feel pressured to act against their their own beliefs. Also, if someone doesn't value something good, then they see a 'popular' person doing it, they may feel inclined to do so as well.

I have always wanted to eat healthier, but I find it difficult sometimes. I started noticing that a few of my friends packed their lunches everyday, and included a healthy salad or sandwich. This made it easier for me to do so because other people around me were doing it, people that I was close to. The outcome was very positive seeing that now, I try to pack my lunch everyday with something healthy, instead of eating the cafeteria food.
