Define and evaluate the concept of a single note (Ratliff, Ch. 6) as an important musical element across all kinds of music. Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element? Why or why not?

the single note to me is a statement in a way, Ratliff uses Thelonious as a musical example is a very good addition to his explanation to this musical element. he talks about the song using one note over and over throughout the whole song to fit the theme of the horns changing and it gives the song and the single note a strong bold feeling and something different it sort of writes a story. its important across all types of music because it isn't too commonly used as ratliff explains in this text “But with a single note you have authenticity, because nobody else has played the single note exactly the same way.” I agree with his arguments after I listened to the excerpt and carefully listened for the single note i thought about what the song would sound like without the note and it truly does make the difference in the music and sets it apart from other music that is produced.

Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

a musical example that i thought of was "kanye west - runaway" to me there is nothing like this song it is a master piece and a classic, the way the long single notes are played in the beginning are very distinct and very different that when the song is played everyone knows exactly what song it is

one musical example i chose to use from ratliffs playlist was "four organs- steve reich" i chose this because throughout the excerpt it plays on single note but just changes keys to make the song differ. compared to other organ songs ive heard played this definitely stands out the most the long single note give a certain feeling and brings thoughts about the song that you wont forget
