We will always have a piecemeal approach until we can REQUIRE incorporate HIPs like theory-based applied or project-based learning, etc., for all instruction. As long as there is no meaningful accountability of faculty instruction, HIPs will only happen in pockets.

Career needs to be more intentionally incorporated into recruitment and onboarding of new students. Everyone on campus should have an infographic that outlines how a college degree (or CI degree) results in greater earnings and social mobility over a lifetime. Everyone on campus should be able to have these data at their fingertips. All incoming students should be contacted by Career at the start to set them up for future internships.

This approach to learning is exciting and innovative and powerful. While we may be doing some of this in “piecemeal” fashion, as mentioned above, we will need to usher a cultural shift. In a recent subcommittee body of work, we proposed building HIPs into program reviews. Perhaps we don’t just ask “what HIPs do students in xx major have access to” but also “when will a student in xx major complete one or more of the following HIPs”.

Staff and faculty are already overwhelmed and overworked. Providing the support for students to engage with experiential learning requires a lot of time and energy from faculty and staff.

Many HIPs are done in pockets, not tracked or documented, lack of data makes it difficult to scale up

We aren't viewed as a community/regional leader or problem-solver; the community doesn't come to us for solutions with community problems

Abraham Flexner founded the Institute for Advanced Study specifically to promote the generation of knowledge for its own sake. While it is important for students to understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom, there is much to be said for helping them understand the joy of learning for its own sake. This is the only way to push back against narratives that school is only good to get a job and that if something can be immediately applied (often meaning monetized) then it has no social value.

In a one-week period (March 5-March 9, 2024) all three schools hosted major community events:

SOE 13th Annual Social Justice in Education Conference which drew 250+ PK12 & HE educators, elected officials & family members to campus for a fully-complimentary event.
MVS 1st Women in Business Conference drew principally women from Ventura and SB Counties for a spectacular conference focused on women in leadership.
Arts & Sciences STEAM Carnival. Over 1K folks showed up on Saturday, March 9. (Food trucks needed in future.)

We need these to be better coordinated with university support.
