Besides the title itself, "Just Mercy," the book depicts mercy within an unmerciful system. Bryan Stevenson, the author, was an attorney during the surge of mass incarceration during the 80s. He started a nonprofit organization called the Equal Justice Initiative that assisted marginalized communities like people of color, the lower class, and victims of mental illnesses. The book allowed readers to see the injustice within the system, and Bryan Stevenson brought light into the incarcerated, most specifically Walter McMillian, a wrongly accused man. It shows us that we need to be more empathetic and tolerant towards marginalized communities; just mercy.

The characters showed mercy and compassion in my book by in one chapter the girl protagonist Patty who is a 12 year old Jewish girl living in Arkansas through the WWII period. She meets a Prisoner of War in her father's store and she realizes that this soldier is not like the mean ones that her dad has talked to her about. Later in the chapter, Patty was out and she finds the man she saw earlier, Anton, and she comes to find out that he escaped from the Prisoner of War Camp. She decides to help him and takes him back to her house to hide because he told her that he only wanted freedom and no violence. Patty then believes him and hides him from being captured again. This shows mercy and compassion because Patty never met Anton before and she risked everything to help him from being captured again.
