As you are exploring your journey as an educator, remember that communication is key. It drives teaching and takes us to the destinations we hope to reach. When it comes to preparing your students to become successful, you must provide them with the tools in order to achieve success. Backward design is an essential component to teaching as it informs the students from day one what their learning goals are and allows them to foresee what is to come. Having a clear structure will take away the stress some students may have when it comes to not knowing what to expect. Organized students will appreciate it as they can see the bigger picture.

With backward design, you are focusing on three stages. Ask yourself, what do I want the students to understand, know and be able to do? Once you have answered these questions, you have completed stage one which is to identify the desired results. Then ask yourself, how do I check they have learned? Consider the most effective forms of assessment and evaluation and this will determine the assessment evidence. Finally, ask yourself, which learning activities will lead students to the desired results? Explore the ideas and collaborate with others to play the learning experiences and instruction.

Like your Italian Associate Teacher told you, backward design makes every lesson meaningful since they were planned according to the desired results. Students will acknowledge the fact that each instruction is a part of the bigger picture. There is a purpose and there is a theme. It values both the teacher's and students' time when learning a concept. In other words, your communication must be timely.

You used backward design as your instructional strategy in your French classes and you continue to learn more about it while developing your skills in delivering it. Like the framework itself, you desire to master the use of it and this can be done through ongoing learning, teamwork and most important of all, your students.

Yours truly,

Alyiana Chu
