If students do not feel safe at school, they will not attend. If staff and students do not feel safe teaching and learning cannot happen. This has a direct impact on academic performance. Safety is a major concern among staff and it is not being addressed. The monies from the stipends could be used to increase attendance incentives as that is still an area that is weak in our dashboard. Chronic absenteeism goes hand in hand with suspensions.

Students with disabilities are more chronically absent due to chronic illness. Off Campus Instruction (OCI) through IEP, which would be an amendment to their IEP.

SRO goes on home visits.

Clerk calls, and writes letters for absences.

Teachers are also making home calls for absences.

Principal tries to be available to work with students.

Students without suspensions, count against the suspension rate. Goal is to keep new kids from being suspended.

Data has been used in the past to find students who have a suspension on record already. Using the data try to decrease the number for a student if possible.

I-Ready , Read Naturally, and AR is in use at both sites.

Stanford uses LEXIA.

Ophir uses DRA , PRIMO, RTI aide, and small group instruction.  Increased library time to promote more reading.  Millionaires club, claw machine, 10,000 words students get certificate. Cross tutoring.

Intervene early,
Create a more positive school culture,
Make it easy to track and act on real-time data (Kickboard),
Provide additional support systems: Some students, of course, may need additional support. Designate one person or a team to greet children as they arrive at school to make it easy for them to ask someone for help if their day is starting off rough. Have the response-to-intervention team recommend targeted interventions for students who are chronically absent or who have lost instructional time due to in-school or out-of-school suspensions. Have extra uniforms or school supplies available for students who might otherwise miss school without them. Refer the students’ family for additional support services or resources as needed.
By being proactive, schools can identify student needs and address them early to prevent chronic absenteeism. When children improve their attendance, they have more time for learning and they improve their chances for graduation and success in college and careers. It all happens one day at a time.
