Initially we analyzed our resources and brainstormed various ideas. Upon further reflection, we decided on a design that was both practical, comfortable and extremely functional. We utilized almost all of our resources and when we came across adversity of a piece breaking we added reinforcements to make our design even stronger. We then tested our design with jumping jacks, push ups, and other athletic movements before recording the video where it excelled. It's also a fashion statement!

Our user, Vegeta, loves high-intensity training but strained his elbow and refuses to take a break. He needs a non-slipping wearable ice pack that won’t restrain his full range of elbow movement, to support rapid punches. Our solution was to cover the ice pack with craft foam so that Vegeta does not feel uncomfortable if the ice pack becomes too cold. We adhered the craft foam together with brads and used popsicle sticks to stabilize the ice pack. We added velcro dots to connect the middle flap of the craft foam together to make it easier for Vegeta to take on and off if he wanted to take a break. Finally, we utilized pipe cleaners to adhere the ice pack to our team member. We decided to attach the pipe cleaners cross-crossed to further ensure that the ice pack would not budge.

Our user (Shrek) needed an ice pack for a broad shoulder that would stay in place through lots of stomping and big arm motions. We designed our ice pack with two straps, one across the body and one around the arm for security through large movements. Our ice pack is also adjustable across the body to accommodate broad shoulders. As you can see, it stayed secure through our prototype testing phase, which consisted of lots of arm swinging to simulate Shrek swatting away flies in the jungle. The use of foam surrounding the ice pack ensures that the ice pack won’t take a mud bath!

Solution:

We designed a strap-based harness that attaches around the neck and shoulder, keeping the ice pack secured and comfortable even while Shrek moves.

We cut out a sheet craft foam and poked holes on each wing with pipe cleaners connecting them. We cut a circle where the heel would be placed so that it does not slide off or rub the foot when person is moving. The ice pack goes between the ankle and one of the wings, which can be taken out when Garnet is fully iced. The final prototype is an adjustable ice pack sock that fits your feet perfectly!

Our user, Patrick, needs an attachment for an ice pack that can stay on his knee while he waddles around Bikini Bottom and bends down to grab “treasures” from the ocean floor. We need to demonstrate that our ice pack can stay securely on the knee without slipping while waddling in place and bending down three times to “pick up” imaginary treasure. Our solution attached the ice pack to a triple-layer foam guard using Velcro dots. Brads were punctured through the guard and pipe cleaners were threaded through the brads to wrap around the leg. The pipe cleaners were also threaded through popsicle sticks to keep the device structurally stable. This solution meets all of the design requirements.

We, the Bone Builders, were tasked with creating an ankle Ice Pack for Garnet, leader of the Crystal Gems. Through the information Garnet provided, we categorized 3 priorities: customization, security, and comfort. We double padded the ice pack with foam to prevent ice burns and used the pipe cleaners to create a design akin to shoes and laces. We twisted the laces around each other to create as much support as possible. To keep the ice pack in place, we placed Velcro dots on the ice pack using a star shaped formation. Overall, we met all design constraints and the testable goal.

We were tasked to design a device to hold an ice pack on the ankle of Garnet, a superhero that relies on maneuverability and powerful kicks. We designed a brace worn around the ankle. The brace is incredibly stable, staying on tight through the goal of 3 sidesteps and 2 fast turns. The brace survived a spinning heel kick without damage, demonstrating durability and viability for Garnet to use in actual combat. In addition, the brace uses very few materials, requiring only one sheet of foam, 2 pipe cleaners, and 5 rivets.

We created a detachable ice pack “bracelet” that one can put on by themselves with ease. We used velcro to create the bracelet’s detachable design, and to combat the potential looseness and to add extra comfort, we padded the inside with craft foam.

Our ankle ice pack, the Ankle Armor, involves using two popsicle sticks to attach the ice pack securely and comfortably and using the foam paper to create an ankle band that is attached with pins and velcros. This allows easy removal and reattachment. Our design is extremely secure and does not move at all while still being flexible and allowing ankle mobility. There are curved cutouts in the band that allow full ankle movement.

We designed an adjustable ice pack belt that can be tightened or loosened using metal pins, and uses velcro to attach the ice pack. the belt is clasped in the front with pipe cleaners, using popsicle sticks to prevent the pipe cleaners from tearing through the foam.

Our assigned client was Shrek, and we designed a secure, insulated, adjustable shoulder ice pack. We controlled two degrees of freedom through a double jointed system wrapping around the neck and arms. The foam provides comfort and an insulating effect.

Even when Shrek is swatting flies or taking a mud bath, the ice pack stays secure and cool on his shoulder. With this design, Shrek's shoulder will meet a happily ever after ending.

Bob Belcher flips burgers but recently hurt his wrist! He needs an attachment for an ice pack that allows him to continue flipping burgers with full wrist rotation.

The team solved this problem by creating an accessible, easy-to-wrap design that allows the ice pack to stay completely secure with full 360° rotation. We used simply a styrofoam sheet and velcro, incorporating a funnel design that allows flexible movement. With a minimalist design using cheap materials, it is an affordable and efficient method to continue doing the work you love.

Our patient, Michelle, hurt her knee and needed a way to keep the ice pack on her knee while still being able to bend down. It was difficult to find a way to get the pack to stay while she bent down, but we solved this by avoiding placing materials directly over her knee, and instead, put foam above and below the knee. We used pins in popsicle sticks to make sure the brace bent with her knee and used foam for extra support and comfort.

Our contraption easily secures to your ankle using a Shoelace Design. Popsicle sticks secured to the foam board with brads allow for pipe cleaner shoestrings to attach the contraption to the ankle, staying secure but adjustable. A notch cut out at the base allows for further foot movement, and the Velcro-secured icepack stays in place for constant contact.

This is Sonia and her knee is hurt, so we made a ice pack which consists of 2 pipe cleaners going around the top and bottom of her knee as well as two popsicle sticks along the side of her knee to help keep full range of motion. We needed a way to secure the ice pack to the knee using strings in a way that makes sure it doesnt break due to tension when the joint undergoes abduction and adduction. we did this via constructing a hinge (using the pins and ice cream sticks) that mirrors that of the knee joint so that movement takes place there rather than the strings which would cause them to break. Strings were tied together and cut to extend them in creative ways (as seen in the video showing the strings over the ice pack) Further, for the objective of comfort, foam was later added under this. The hinge was then secured with velcro to the wearing bands to ensure no slippage movements take place for our user patrick to jump about freely !
