On that morning, he planned to walk two blocks to the bus stop where he would board his school bus; this was the first time he walked to it alone. “Etan was up and dressed and packing his own lunch and his school bag with a vengeance. He was going to do it all himself that morning" stated Julie Patz, Etan's mother. The young boy never got on the bus and was marked absent at school. 

Julie Patz recalls the absolute pain and fear she felt upon realizing her son was missing. She said her legs started giving out and she had difficulty breathing. A long search with about 100 officers lasted for many weeks. Pictures of Etan appeared on missing child posters and milk cartons (he was the first missing child to have his picture on milk cartons). However, few leads were generated and the case eventually went cold. A deep wound was cut in the hearts of the city, the community, and the parents of Etan, Stanley and Julie. 

On May 24, 2012, one day before the 33rd anniversary of Etan's disappearance, Pedro Hernandez, who was in custody, confessed to kidnapping, strangling and throwing Etan's remains in the garbage. Hernandez was charged with kidnapping and felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison. However, he suffers from schizotypal personality disorder and a low IQ of 70, meaning whether he really did kill Etan Patz remains unknown. 

Every year on Etan's birthday and the anniversary of his disappearance, Stanley sent a missing poster of his son to Jose Ramos, who was convicted of sexually abusing children and was a prime suspect in the kidnapping. On the back of every poster was the same question: "What did you do to my little boy?" His disappearance created more attention and awareness for missing children. The concepts of stranger danger and putting pictures of missing children on milk cartons are credited to the Patz disappearance. On May 25, 1983, four years after the kidnapping, the United States declared the anniversary of Etan's disappearance "National Missing Children's Day."

In June, anti-LGBTQ+ people intend to flood pro-LGBTQ+ posts with homophobic comments and propaganda. Reportably, they also intend to increase the number of homophobic driven crimes in a campaign known as Operation Pridefall. This includes murder and kidnappings. More information can be found here:

To add my two cents, I doubt the amount of crimes motivated by homophobia will increase. Campaigns like this have usually added up to nothing in the past. One example would be the threatened clown purge for Halloween of 2016. Nothing ever came out of that. Same with the Area 51 Raid. Did people actually raid it? No. Plus, according to the 4chan forum, homophobic comments have been overshadowed by positive comments. Who knows if the same will happen this year? But still, please be careful. It's a problem that plagues many parts of the world for no clear reason. But the question remains: why on Earth is homophobia a thing? Is it because of the misconception that the Bible promotes homosexuality as a sin? Or is it because homosexuality has been buried under social norms for so long that people refuse to accept it as normal? Let me tell you all a story that I'm certain I've told you before:

Matthew Shepherd was a young student at the University of Wyoming who was attacked at the age of 21 on October 6, 1998. The assailants robbed and pistol whipped Matthew, then tied him to a fence and left him to die. His face was entirely covered in blood, minus parts that had been cleaned by tears. But what was the motive for the attack? The answer: homophobia. Matthew was gay and his attackers were homophobic. It's a simple answer but a powerful one. Shepherd succumbed to his injuries six days later on October 12, 1998. 

The need to discriminate and murder people for the sole reason of sexuality is unjustified. If two people love each other, gender should not get in the way of that. It's unbelievable how people don't understand that LGBTQ+ love is not any different from heterosexual love. Love is love. Simple as that.

Twenty five years ago today, we lost the kind and inspiring painter Bob Ross. On his show "The Joy Of Painting", he taught us that anyone can learn to paint if they truly put their mind to it; a lesson that can apply to anything in life. In his words, "Talent is a pursued interest. Anything that you're willing to practice, you can do."

In 1961, when he was 18, Ross joined the Air Force and became a sergeant. It was during his time at the Eielson Air Base in Alaska that he first witnessed heavenly white snow and tall, beautiful mountains, both of which were absent in his hometown of Daytona Beach, Florida. The breathtaking sights led him to discover a hobby that would later bring joy to not just himself but to many people around the world: painting. He eventually quit the army to pursue a career in painting. He chose to quit because, in his words, "The job requires you to be a mean, tough person. And I was fed up with it. I promised myself that if I ever got away from it, it wasn't going to be that way any more."

After that, he vowed to never yell or shout again. And he kept his promise. On his classic show, Ross always spoke with a calm and soothing voice that created a sense of comfort for the viewer. His signature quote, "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents", spoken with a gentle input, tells us that the blunders of our past are just little accidents, which are made my everyone. If we are held back by the accidents of our past, we can never accomplish our dreams. 

Sadly, Ross died in 1995, age 52, after battling lymphoma for several years. His distinctive hairstyle, soft mannerisms, and kindly presence will always hold a place in the hearts of many fans. Rest in peace: Robert Norman Ross (October 29, 1942 to July 4, 1995).

On that day, a young boy with dreams of becoming an actor and performer was born in Hafnarfjordur, Iceland. His town had a lively theater community that allowed him to live out his dreams. Although most of the citizens in his town loved plays, he was often bullied at school for the time he spent at the theater. But he didn't let the bullies get to him. Theater was what made him happy and nothing was going to stop that, not even bullying. Eventually, he began studying at the Drama Academy of Iceland, where he disagreed with the principal's policy on acting. He had always been interested in a physical clowning style of acting, something his principal disliked. Despite this, he never forced himself to submit to his principal's preferred acting style. Their disagreement was not going to stop him from living out his dreams.

That boy was Stefán Karl Stefánsson.

One day, Stefán met gymnast Magnús Scheving at a party. The two were instantly drawn to each other and so Scheving cast Stefán in his upcoming play, "Glanni Glæpur í Latabæ" (Robbie Rotten in Lazytown). It was from "Glanni Glæpur í Latabæ" that Stefán's most famous role was born: Robbie Rotten. This role allowed him to utilize his cartoonish style of acting, which was truly a dream come true.

Stefán knew very early in life that he was going to die young. He lived each day with this in mind, never wasting the ticking seconds he had left on Earth. In his words, "I do not fear death, as I cherish life too much." Two years ago today, his life was claimed by bile duct cancer at age 43. But even when he had cancer, he was still positive and full of life. The struggles he endured never held him back. He lived life to the fullest and left behind a field of accomplishments. His hopeful outlook remained intact even when he was diagnosed with cancer. The memories and laughs he created will forever be engraved into our hearts.
