This gate, along with the building, dates from 1840. It used to be a monastery for the Sisters of Maria. Now it belongs to the primary school of Egem 'de Akker' since 2017.
This gate is sprayed with graffiti by Julie 'Djoels' Bouckhuyt. She is a tattoo artist and won in 2017 the 'Ink Master van de Lage Landen'. Ink Master is a competition to decide who the best all-round tattoo artist is from the Low Countries.
I chose this gate because I have been to this school myself. I have also seen the nuns walking around. Julie is the stepmother of one of my friends from when I was young. I think she has beautiful works, so I chose this photo for this project.

It commemorates both military and civilian victims of the First and Second World Wars. In the centre we see a representation of a wounded soldier with the caption 'To our heroes' underneath. It was created in 1926 to commemorate the fallen soldiers from Aarsele of World War I. Later, the names of fallen soldiers and civilian victims (from World War II) were also placed on the pedestal.

It’s my school. De Bron, it’s a very old school (the current building was built in 1913, the school itself was founded in 1686) however the building hasn't always been a school. During World War II, the school was a place for refugees. It was temporarily set up as a Belgian military hospital, and later occupied by the Germans.

The wall I chose for this project is one that I pass by every day to go to school. It is one of the walls of the restaurant 'De Peerdekens' in Egem. The building was built in the year 1906 and at that time it was used as an inn. Throughout time, there certainly are many stories told within the walls of the building. That's why I thought this wall fits perfectly into the theme of the project.

The wall itself also has a story. In August 2019, an 18-year-old man crashed right into the restaurant's facade. Because of the massive damage caused by the accident, the restaurant had to close for several days. Fortunately, the man remained uninjured and the restaurant was able to reopen after a week. The wall has now been rebuilt and stories are being told again.

The walls of Castle 'Ter Borcht'. This building is located in my street. I think it is a very beautiful building, but there is also a history behind it. As you can see on the picture the castle has been renovated in 2017. It is now used for cultural events in Meulebeke. In 1330 was the name 'Kasteel Ter Borcht' first mentioned. Royal families have moved in and out over the years. The first lord in the castle was Thomas van Mortagne. That was in 1289, they didn't called it a castle yet, but a manor. In 1692 the castle was conquered by the French and also in 1794 the French soldiers were billeted in the castle. In the second hzlf of the 20th century the castle was bought by the municipality for recreation purposes.

The Ginstegrot is a Marian cave in Oostrozebeke. It is a traditional place of pilgrimage. The cave is located next to St Joseph's church. It belongs to the inventory of immovable heritage. The neighborhood was originally disbelieving.

History

The origin of the cave is due to E.H. Jozef Cosyn. This vicar of Oostrozebeke wanted to erect a monument in honour of Our Lady after the First World War. He wanted to thank her because the congregation had been spared during the war.

In the summer of 1920, the grotto was built. The land had been donated by Miss Clotilde Tack. The cave was built with rubble taken from the front of Zonnebeke by the farmers of De Ginste.

On the first Sunday of May 1921, the very first pilgrimage to the Ginstegrot took place. In 1922, the seven chapels of the Seven Sorrows were placed near the grotto. In 1926, both the grotto and chapels were damaged by vandals and repaired the same year.

Construction workers used 6,000 kilos of cement to make the new cave. A pulpit was added, as well as a holy water barrel and planting

The annual pilgrimage takes place on the first Sunday in May. There are also numerous other pilgrimages during the May and June months.
