This video shows Islamic women and its community is being affected by the Western media. Elizabeth was an aspiring model who promoted beachwear. She talks about her experience in one of the shots that she was doing. Elizabeth mentions that the people who were in charge of the photoshoot told her that she gained a little bit of weight so they didn’t want to use her in the next shot. Elizabeth mentions that she felt not only ashamed but she told felt like an object rather than a human. Pricilla another woman who is Muslim mentions in the video is that when she was working men would look at her in strange ways. She felt uncomfortable and started to cover herself up. Prof. Rasha Al-Disuqi says that Islam has suffered from media all over the world especially the women. Media and books give an image if Islam. When a “hot issue” media intensify against the Muslim people. After the 9/11 endless shots of women in burkas showed that Islam women are suffering and how the other countries should rescue them. Any signs of head covering were seen as Islamic oppression. Elizabeth mentions in the video ‘sex sells.’ As discussed in the course the advertising industry uses women’s bodies and other various parts of it to sell certain products (such as beer, clothing, etc.). When we were watching the video some of the facts that fascinated us is that there are both good Muslim and bad Muslim but, in the media, you never see any good Muslim shown on the media. Some of the facts that were mentioned in the video that also surprised us were that on an average we are exposed to 2000 ads per day. When you pass by stores the mannequins that a person usually sees is thin, tall, young, long-legged. Ads like these reduce women to objects and their sexual content resulting in pornography.

IRCR Media.

This is a Tom Ford for men’s clothing, my question is why do they have a naked woman being touched by a man as their selling objective. In our option, it is disgusting and hurtful that for a men’s clothing ad they need to have a naked woman included in the picture. This is not the first-time Tom Ford used women as objects in his ads, we found over ten ads that use a women body as an object and objectifies women. This picture is a great example of how the media makes women look and what young girls see.

Sexual Objectification of Women in the Media.

In this video, a woman sent an unaltered photo of herself to photoshop experts around the world. She asked them to make her look beautiful. Most of the countries showed her having whiter skin, fuller lips, and blue or green coloured eyes. Places like Australia prefer to have tanned skin because their lives revolve around the beach. In a survey 90% of women in Germany would spend would cancel their first date then go without makeup. In the UK women spend at least $15000 on makeup in their lifetime. The last picture on the video was the girl faced photoshopped from the USA. Her face was smaller, her neck was slimmer and she has a “contoured” look. As discussed in the course ideology is based on the society’s expectations and how women should look and behave. This ideology is impossible to achieve without photoshop and, in reality only a very small percentage of women actually look like this. What surprised us the most is that despite the fact only 60% of people say inner beauty counts the most places like Germany and British women spend a lot of time putting on their makeup.

As/Is.

This video shows the beauty trends that women have faced in North America. The thigh gaps. What is a thigh gap? When a woman stands up straight there should be a gap between the legs. Girls don’t want their thighs to touch. Another, most popular and well know tend in the media regarding was the Kylie Jenner lip challenge where girls would use plastic bottles or shot glass to suck the air out of the glass to create plump and fuller looking lip. Despite the fact that Doctors warn the cause of the number of issues involved girls still continue to do this act. In the video, the lady mentions, “we raise little girls to view their bodies as projects to constantly be improved.” In the video, they mention a girl who didn’t know that she was rapped only when she found out naked pictures of her online. One girl states, “social standard that’s put up in the media, and then women try to meet it and they get criticized. There is no winning.” As learned in the course ads feature women to look ridiculous and ‘unreal’ by showing perfect bodies, faces, etc. It impacts on how women feel about themselves and their self-worth and self-image. Since we are both girls we are used to seeing women being objectified in ads but one thing that surprised us about this video is the number of teens spending money on cosmetic surgery. We thought this would be more common in young adults. Girls shouldn’t be growing up thinking that looks are more important rather than how they feel or who they are and what they can do.

WomenNotObjects.

This article talks about stereotypes that perpetuate gender discrimination. Women in the media are shown to be thin and sexualizing. Women in the media talk less than men and have fewer options. Women are less likely to play a role as professional or as leaders. In a study, it shows that more than 100 countries around 46% of videos and ads that uphold gender stereotypes and only 6% shows gender equality. Men still occupy 73% of the top media. Over the years the cyberbullying has extended the harassment and stalking of women online. The article mentions about the Beijing Platform for Action which is a document that states that there should be an increase of women included in decision making and present women as leader and rike nides and, to abdomen stereotypes. In the course, we learned how women are treated as objects in certain cultures/areas. There is a higher rate of violence in women then there are men. These ads continue to motivate people to view women as objects rather than the person they are. In the article one of the quotes really stood out to us: “ the media shapes our world – but so do women, as powerful agents of change in all areas of society. It's time for media to reflect this reality (UN Women, ND).” What this quote is saying that the media plays a very big part of our society but also women.

In ads, women are shown to have perfect skin without any blemishes, wrinkles or scars. Her waist is tiny, she has long smooth legs and large breasts and buttocks. The women's hair is always shown to be healthy looking and shiny. The women pictured in ads are not real. It is the result of makeup and days of photo retouching. Brands like Dove try to move away from the image of perfection and claim to be photoshop free however they still feature attractive women in campaigns. As learned in the course the term objectification means that women in advertising pave the way for pornography which degrades women due to its focus on hypersexualization. In the article, it mentions that in the 1960s ads served as a feminist manifestation for women to love and honour their bodies. Seeing ads now days puts a totally different meaning in the pictures.

Suggett, P.

What surprised us the most was the way ads started out promoting the female body to love and honour their bodies and not be considered as an object. This topic is relevant to us because every day in our lives wethers it's on our phones, the bus, or even on the news were being exposed to “beautiful” looking people. Despite the fact that we know that some of the pictures that we see are fake we still feel jealous and degrade ourselves for not looking like that. Reading the articles and, watching the video made us realize that not only in North America but many women are around the world are being exposed to ads that objectify women. The research we found most interesting was the Beijing Platform for Action. Knowing that there are laws and regulations out there to help women and young girls to dream big and be comfortable in the body is very comforting especially in today's society. What we will most likely remember from this research is that there is not only us but many other young women and teens that are exposed to this types of media. Despite the fact, the media shows beautiful and perfect women don't mean that you have to be perfect. Just as each country has its own traditions and culture each individual is beautiful in there own way.
