Heavy Union casualties occurred, as the rebels (Confederates) had the terrain advantage, but the battle ended up being a draw. Grant refused to back down although, he ordered his weakened troops to further their invasion southward to the capital.

Bloody fights had partaken in the Virginian woods, the Wilderness. Union forces quickly passed the Confederate lines, only to be pushed back by rebels (Confederates). Casualties were serious, as 18,000 Union and 11,000 Confederate casualties were dealt in this battle alone. This is one of the most bloody battles of the Civil War. Grant eventually left his troops, but ordered them to move south towards Virginia's capital, Richmond.

Ulysses S. Grant ordered many bloody attacks against the Confederate troops. On June 1, 1864 the Confederate line was almost broken by the Union with major casualties but they still managed to hold up their side. Approximately 6,000 troops on the Union side were either killed or captured during the June 3rd assault.
