Nature Walk Bracelets —Robin

For this activity you will need some sort of tape, I’d recommend duct tape, scissors to cut twigs or any other nature things the children see. You also can bring magnifying glasses for each child to carry in case they want to inspect items closer. To start off I’d let the children know the rules and expectations while we’re on our walk, next inform them we are going on a nature walk. Explain to them in detail what we are going to be collecting and making a nature bracelet. Make sure the children are putting the items onto their bracelet. Also be sure to know which route you are going on, inform your director.

An extension to this could be to read the book “Meeka Loves Nature Plants”. If you can read in Inuktitut I highly recommend. This activity includes gross motor skills, social domain and language.

Parts of an Arctic Char

In this activity, children will learn the parts of an Arctic char. They will cut the pieces of the char then glue it onto the right spot to match what the Arctic char looks like.

The theme is Arctic animals. An additional activity that could compliment the activity would be letting the children play with magnetic fish. I would put magnetic fish into a little container and give the children toy fishing rods with magnets on the end of the hook and get the children to try catch the fish.

This activity improves 3 domains of development: physical (fine motor skills), language and cognitive developments. I could teach this outside filing up a little tub or inflatable pool, putting water into the tub, and adding in the toy fish into the water then showing the children how I’m going to try catch as many fish as I could with the magnetic fishing rod. Another way I could teach the children is helping the children actually try ice fishing when our daycare class goes out on our spring fishing trip out on the frozen lake. I would explain to them that we have to be very careful when using a jigger as the hook is very sharp, so I would put the hook down the ice hole before I hand the jigger to the children to keep them from harm. Then I would teach them how to properly hold onto the jigger and show the children how to jig and what to do if/when they catch a fish.

-Lisa

LISA: Great Lesson! I love the activity and the extension of fishing. Can you add in some of the domains and curriculum? How could you teach some of this outside? A picture too if you can find one on the internet. FUN! =) Bre

I would explain the children about winter writing theme. I would get their attention and explain to them about winter writing theme, winter writing theme is learning to write or trace your name in a bucket of snow or outside on the ice or land and let them write there names or Inuktitut name, their parents name and whatever they want to write or trace. If they’re going outside, i would get our staff to help or see them get dressed, head out and get first aid kit, walk outside and tell them there’s boundaries. Then i would get them to either sit or stand if they like to write their names or colours they like, what they like( favourite teams or favourites colours , etc.)

We can use our finger, pualuk, or piece of wood to trace or write their names.

They would use 2 domains language and physical. Language- they would ask how to spell their favourite colours or teams).

Physical- children would going up and down to write their names/parent names (etc). Walking around to see where they can write on a clean untouched snow. Fine motor for pre-printing and gross motor for outdoor snow tracing.

-Holly Kayuryuk

For this activity you will need cotton balls, popsicle sticks, buttons/beads and some craft papers to shape into a hat or nose for the snowman.

Or you can also take the kids outside to play and build a snowman, if there isn’t any rocks you can go inside and use some crafting papers also to make into little buttons. For example: “Hey kids! You want to help me build a snowman?”

But for this inside activity, for example: “Who wants to do crafts? Who wants to make a snowman and bring it home to your Anaana or ataata?” And most kids will be excited “Me!”

This includes physical and social domains.

janaya niego.

Digging in Nature

For this activity, children will collect nature items found in the fall. They will practice fine motor skills while digging. They will also practise counting and sorting small numbers of objects. This helps with developing the cognitive domain. They will notice the difference between rocks and sand and organize them. This game also helps with their physical skills such as holding a scoop and bringing it into a bucket, using good balance.

To add to this theme, we can bring rocks inside and paint on them, using paint brushes, sponges or even q-tips to help with their fine motor skills such as colouring and drawing, painting and gluing.

-Angel A.
