Mexico was completely under Spanish control, and society was organized by race. Between 1810 and 1821, Mexico fought in a battle for independence from Spain. As Napoleon invaded Spain, weakening Spain's control of New Spain, colonists started a revolution led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Mexico became independent in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence, which began with Hidalgo's Grito de Dolores in 1810. Different movements fought for independence, but Guerrero and Iturbide finally succeeded with their Army of the Three Guarantees.

During the Napoleonic Wars the British helped the Portuguese royal family to escape Europe and set up court in Brazil. Brazil was then raised to an equal partner in the Empire forming the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarve's. On September 7, 1822, Prince Dom Pedro declared Brazil's independence from Portugal, founding the Empire of Brazil, which led to a two-year war of independence. It was fought on land and sea and involved both regular forces and civilian militia. Independence was recognized by Portugal in August 1825.
