Existing schools were pressured to teach their curriculum in Japanese, and students were made to sing the Japanese national anthem. However, there was a lack of Japanese teachers and textbooks, and the Japanese were forced to allow a combination of the Japanese and English languages until the arrival of the first Japanese textbook in Singapore. To further supplement Japanese education, Japanese lessons were played over the schools" broadcasting systems
(this part is sourced from the Singaporean history textbook Singapore: From Settlement To Nation Pre 1819 To 1971).

From the both sources,I can infer that the lives of teenagers were probably having difficulties coping with their studies back then. Source A shows that there were British people wearing uniforms and this tells me that all of them could be attending an English school as there were no other races around hence, before the Japanese Occupation, people went to different schools depending their language and races.
However, as seen from source B, during the Japanese Occupation, students were forced to join newly-erected Japanese schools and learn the language. Schools were forced to teach their lessons in the foreign language and students were required to sing the Japanese national anthem for flag-raising. Some teenagers were forced to withdraw from their existing schools to join the Japanese ones. Thus, based on the souces given above, I can infer that the lives of the teenagers were probably having difficulties coping with their subjects back then.

Sometimes, locals would have to resort to eating porridge for weeks or months. Also, due to the cramped and unsanitary conditions and lack of food, many locals and POWs contracted illnesses like malaria, cholera and suffered from malnutrition. Since there was little medication to treat the patients, many were dead. This shows how Japanese were heartless and inhumane and spared no thoughts for the locals living in Singapore at that time. Hence, I can infer that the lives of teenagers were affected by this as it means that there was not enough food for them.

Relationship Of Races

Source A
"There was some resentment of both British rule and the Chinese success in the colony, although there was no significant anti-colonial resistance before the War. Some Malays looked on the Chinese in much the same way some Europeans looked on Jews. The Malays were mostly Muslim and for the most part uneducated. Islam and their culture in general made them more resistance to Westernization and this included education. "
http://histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/cou/sing/ww2s-civ.html
Source B
"During the Japanese occupation, the locals, especially the chinese, were cruelly and brutally treated by the Japanese. They had a grudge against the Chinese as they had helped China in their fight with the Japanese. Compared to the Chinese, the Indians and Malays had had a much easier time with the Japanese, though those who the Japanese thought to be going against them were also dealt with severely."
http://the-darkest-time.blogspot.sg/
From both sources, I can infer that the teenagers' lives were affected by the relationship between races that happened before and during Japanese Occupation as there might be conflicts happening between them due to the different races or religion they had. In source A, it can be seen that the Malays did not have a good relationship with the Chinese and British that were living in Singapore before the World War 2. From the evidence when it stated "Some Malays looked on the Chinese in much the same way some Europeans looked on Jews", it shows that the Malays hated on the Chinese as much as European hated in the Jews for their culture and heritage. This shows that before the Japanese Occupation discrimination between races had already started.
In addition, in source B, we can see that the Japanese punished the chinese more than the other races as they believed that those that were chinese were bound to be accomplices with China and hence without interogating them, Japanese just headed on to brutally abused them. Even though there were punishment of the Indians and Malays due to defying of orders from Japanese, but the number of them were not alot as compared to the Chinese. This greatly affects on how people think against one another and therefore, I can infer that the lives of teenages were affected by it.
