In my classroom, we use the Foundations curriculum. Fundations refers to a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program for K-3 students. It is a part of the Wilson Reading System. There is a heavy emphasis on phonemic awareness and word study as well studying trick words.

"During a map activity, Lily located the Haitian flag, found Haiti on the world map, encompassed the area with her arms and embraced the small island on the 2D map, declaring, “I want Haiti. I want Haiti. Here’s Haiti!” Her unflappable enthusiasm made way for her mother’s planned visit to the classroom early in the school year. On that day, she pretended to harbor a joyous secret, whispering to others, “Spoiler alert, spoiler alert,” referring to her mother’s arrival” I absolutely adored this quote as I pictured how happy Lily was and it also make me think of myself and how excited I would get when we ever talked about Ireland. I always picked it for country studies or cultural studies because it is my families home and it always made me so happy to talk about.

When I think of my identity and literacy, I immediate think about read alouds. In my experience, most read alouds in schools center around a young able bodied, white boy or girl. As an educator, I want to ensure that my read alouds reflect all identities, abilities and backgrounds. I want all my students to be seen and to be exposed to all different types of people as that is what the world is, unique and different!
