You can create blog-type sites where you can post text, images, quotes, videos, etc. It's better than other blog sites because you can connect with other users, ask questions on their blogs or chat through instant messages. The Tumblr community has plenty of academics and students post their ideas (in a more informal way) on Tumblr, so you can come across all sorts of opinions and ideas. Once you're familiar with it, it's not hard to use and customize at all. 
We think this tool would be particularly appealing to teenagers and advanced students.
