The theme of the story is that not everything is perfect, and people might be hiding how they truly feel, and coming of age and figuring out that people could be hiding how they truly feel and maturity requires humans to be able to empathize with others and not be self-centered. Also the story shows that making mistakes is okay but its how to respond and learn from them.

-Emma Kraus

Eugene Colliers, “Marigolds”, attributes to the global problem of poverty and maturity through its main character maturing and basically becoming a new person in the end. This book highlights her progressively losing her innocence and starting to show compassion for others around her while also starting to realize others struggles and realizing she is in the same boat. The theme that she might have been trying to convey is most likely, sometimes people have to lose something or see something in an unusual way to see other peoples feeling and perspective.

Through symbolism and signals Eugenia Collier’s Story represents the idea that maturity is extremely important. She shows this throughout the whole story but especially When she ruined Mrs. Lottie’s marigold. She showed maturity because when it happened, she was used to someone getting mad at her when she makes a mistake, but Mrs. Lottie didn’t, she was just upset. This showed maturity because she learned from her mistakes. In this short story the author is showing us how to learn from are mistakes and to become more mature every single day.
Harrison Bledsoe
