In the movie many kingdoms wish to burn and destroy the jungle to take back the earth from the insects. This leads to many conflicts between nations in the story. However Nausicaa makes discoveries that the jungle itself isn't poisonous but only the soil is, and she finds that all the trees in the jungle are absorbing the pollution from the earth in order to purify. This supports the idea that Nature will always try to protect and nurture the planet. Nausicaa also tries to help the people live in harmony with the jungle instead of trying to destroy it, that humanity needs to sit back this time, so that the damage they have inflicted can be fixed.

In the movie, a lot oceanic pollution can be seen. Ponyo's father is completely against Ponyo's love for humans as they "spoil the sea", but she is determined to become human like Sosuke. The movie tries to show that harmony between humans and nature is necessary to maintain balance. The relationship between Ponyo (who represents the sea) and Sosuke (who represents man) shows us that.
