I often ask students to consider what they have learned by asking a question that reviews the skill. For instance after leaning about the different types of slope asking, "How do we know this slope is negative?" I have mixed responses. Silence is the response that occurs the most often. Some may respond in the chat with a few words - not a full explanation - but it continues to be a struggle to get a true and valid response.

I randomly put the students in breakout groups to discuss a question I posed and had no response to. The talk and turn helped them get their thoughts together. When returning to the whole group I did have a couple of response in the chat but virtually the class does not participate much.

Having the students explain key concepts of what they have learned in their own words. Then have other classmates repeat or explain their own learning. Through peers explaining and hearing repetitive information students not only grasp concepts but also feel more confident to contribute in discussion

JM
Once questions have been answered I then asked several students to repeat what was said. I found this learner-centered routine clarified misunderstandings and misinterpretations in students' reasoning. It honed in on those who understand and those who needed further support. In this way it is a great formal assessment. I was also able to decipher at times students who were not paying attention in class because they were not able to repeat what was said. This encourage others who may have been in the same boat to now pay attention.

There are many applications to stop and jots that we use, one example being our "do now" at the beginning of class, which is often a notice and wonder type of question. It shows graphs, pictures, data, equations, etc. and asks the kids to write down what they notice and what they wonder about it. It leads to a discussion about what we're looking at and how it relates to a problem in the lesson. Stop and jots could also be students explaining in their own words how they would show a student who was absent how to solve a particular problem.
