This is an FAQ page about digital tools and pedagogies during the Canvas transition. It is designed as a quick way to share answers to questions as they arise, but it isn't intended as a long-term resource. It is maintained by Cara Berger, contact me at cara.berger@manchester.ac.uk

General advice would be to not replicate information in several places as this leads to inconsistencies if information is changed in one place but not in another. In most cases, Canvas makes handbooks obsolete but there may be particular units where a handbook fulfils a specific function not covered well by Canvas. In those cases units may still want to use a handbook together with the Canvas page. You will want to consider that Canvas is dynamic and editable, whereas a handbook is static (so should only contain information that is certain to not change for the duration of a unit).

It provides a controlled digital environment where students draft and submit their work, such as essays and reports.
How do we begin responding to GenAI use in assessments in our unit / programme / subject area?

Below are some initial suggestion on how to start actively thinking through the effects of GenAI in assessment. If individual, programmes or teams generate practical, innovative findings from such activities, please do loop in Cara Berger as AD eLearning and Teaching Innovation for SALC.

Stress test assessments: Use AI tools to produce an exemplar response to your assignment brief. Consider how much and what kind of prompting it takes to create work that is passable. Track what kind of ethical grey areas arise in this process. Use the stress testing exercise as a starting point for discussing what variously constitutes good practice, poor practice and malpractice in relation to your assignment.

Map GenAI outputs against Grade Descriptors: Take a core essay question or assignment brief from your programme. Generate a response using a common AI tool with a relatively simple prompt. Analyse the AI-generated text against the Grade Descriptors in hour unit. Identify its strengths (e.g., coherent structure, clear prose) and, more importantly, its weaknesses. Does it lack a critical voice? Does it fail to engage with specific scholarly sources from the reading list? When it uses sources, does it only do so superficially? If it uses direct quotations, are these real or ‘hallucinated’? The findings can be used to create guidance for students on what constitutes high-quality work within the Grade Descriptors.

Diversify assessment tasks: Consider exploring assessment formats that are inherently less susceptible to uncritical AI use because they reward authentic student engagement. The goal is to design tasks that evaluate skills beyond automated text production, such as critical thinking in real-time, personal reflection, or embodied practice. By diversifying the forms of assessment, you can more effectively measure learning outcomes that AI cannot easily replicate. Examples of such assessment tasks include:

In-person or 'live' assessments: Formats such as oral exams (vivas), in-class debates, observed practical exercises, or authentic assessment tasks. These methods assess a student's ability to articulate, apply, and defend their understanding dynamically and in a specific context.

Context-specific and reflective assessments: Tasks that require students to connect course concepts to their own experiences, a specific seminar discussion, or a local event. These rely on unique, individualised contexts that GenAI cannot access or authentically reproduce since they aren’t part of its training data.

These suggestions have been generated in part by drawing on guidance developed in SEED and SOSS.

Canvas allows for two forms of discussion organisation 'focussed' and 'threaded'. If you want to allow multiple posts and sub-posts in a discussion, select the threaded discussion option in the settings. Please note that students are able to turn off notifications for discussion boards, so it is better not to use these for critical announcements. You can find more information on how to setup and manage discussion boards here. Note that it seems like students aren't automatically enrolled to get notifications on discussion threads unless they reply to a discussion, and there is no way to bulk subscribe students to a particular discussion (except graded discussions).
