1897
France
Symbolism
Pastels, Charcoal, Paper
Compare too; Theotokos and Child: Both of these paintings are religious pieces that depict Jesus with a distinct gold yellow halos. This represents there importance and divinity. The two works also use somewhat of darker colors and the figure(s) have no emotion.
Contrast too; Theotokos and Child: One depicts Jesus as a baby with the Virgin Mary and Saint Theodore & George. It is also Byzantine art that was an encoustic icon painting in Mount Sinai Monestary. Christ in Silence depicts Jesus as an adult with his eyes close. He seems to be thinking of something; this painting has more of a scratchy look.

1912
France
Symbolism
Oil on Canvas
Compare too; Birth of Venus: Both depict Venus the Roman goddess of beauty and love. She is nude for the most part in both and is depicted coming out of a shell. Their hair color and body/complexion are similar.
Contrast too; Odilon Redon Venus is more distorted and she is not covering herself. The shell she is coming out of shapes her whole entire body almost representing a real womb. Venus arm and leg is in a different position. Botticelli Venus is much more precise and also has Venus covering her private areas. This Birth of Venus also has Zephyr, Aura, and an attendant trying to cover her with a cloth. This piece is Tempera on Canvas and was decoration for the Medici home and also has a distinct background; use of linear perspective; Northern Renaissance.

1875
France
Symbolism
Oil on Canvas
Compare too; Angel with Arquebus: Both are oil on canvas and contain portray angels in a somewhat dark view. These are both Sacred or Religious pieces and just have the one figure in the picture. Contrast too; In Angel in Chains the Angel is sitting on a rock nude. The angel has black wings and is in-front of a red background which could be depicting a captured angel in hell. The Angel in the Angel with Arquebus is clothed and is similar to mannerist artwork. The clothes on the angel is like an Englishman but he wears a feathered headdress which represents the cross culture in the painting. This represents Gods army coming to protect Christianity.
