On 1 January 1994 the European Union created unified European Economic Area thereby allowing people, goods, and services to move around EEA. Austria, Finland, and Sweden join the European Union on 1 January 1995. Later this year on March 26 EU makes a Schengen agreement, travelers can move between 7 countries without passport controls at the frontiers. 

On 1 January 1999 the European Union introduced euro in 11 countries, United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden decide to stay out of this agreement. 

In the 1990, the Chilean player Roberto Rojas was wounded by fireworks, but was later proven to have cut himself with a razor. The player was subsequently banned for life. 

The 1994 World Cup had the biggest crowd in the event’s history. The best players this year were Oleg Salenko who became the first player to score five goals in a World Cup finals game and Romário, he received the “Golden Ball” award. 

The 1998 World Cup in France allowed more nations to participate in the tournament. Instead of 24 teams, 32 ones were qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals. 

In the first half, the young Zidane scored two goals, making it 2-0 for the French national team.

Straps Down, bike shorts, headbands, slip dresses, velvet suits, flannel shirts, skate hand-made graphic tees and neon windbreakers – shall I name more? These items are enough to create a typical image of a dandy from 90s. Though, as far as fashion is cyclical, most forgotten somewhere in a closet elements of a look are back in style these days.

What has influenced art those days? Racism and multiculturalism were the topics that were hotly debated. One of the distinguishing artworks was an admissions button designed by Daniel J. Martinez, saying “I can’t imagine ever wanting to be white”. 

At the same time, the rise of the World Wide Web took its place. Artists’ works primarily were appearing on the Web. Even though it attracted some attention from museums, it still was mostly just an experimental practice.

Few artists were working in traditional media. Most of them began creating possibilities for visitors to interact with something. For example, Rirkrit Tiravanija served curry to gallery visitors and Felix Gonzales-Torres assembled mountains of candies.

Is there a possibility that the 1990s are still going on? As a matter of fact, people still queue for free curry at museums, the only difference is that they will take photos of it with their phones before eating.

Cross-fertilisation was a main trait of 90s music, with indie singers appearing on dance tracks, and artists like Beck putting hip hop next to folk music in inventive ways. There even were the rock bands who would invite a rapper to liven a verse in their otherwise perfectly normal rock songs.

In the early 1990s dance music was at war with polite society. The biggest tunes were invading the charts without the help of mainstream radio play, reflecting a generation gap that emerged between people who understood it and those who did not. This gave a rise to electronic music and the widening of its genres.

With the success of Nirvana, alternative rock groups entered the music mainstream in the 1990s. A subgenre of alternative rock, grunge groups as well gained popularity. 

The 1990s brought us the wildest trends and gave birth to the most iconic music styles ever seen. And some of their songs are still very popular, even despite the years that have passed.
