It was dangerous and life-threatening for Jews to even walk outside during the war - Gabi

Example 1 : The Jews were in constant hiding and having to survive in less than healthy conditions. One of Vladek's friends was living in a rubbish bin in the courtyard of someone's house. Showing the lengths they had to go to in order to not get caught by the Gestapo as it would mean they would lose their life.
"Inside this garbage hole was here separated by a tiny space - maybe only 5 feet by 6 feet. I looked down only for a second but in there was living Milcoch, his wife and their 3 years old boy."

Example 2 : The Jews were being painted in a very negative light that caused fear and ultimate dislike towards the Jews. The children of families were afraid of them and yelled that there was a Jew in the streets, alerting their families. It demonstrates the danger of even walking the streets to get to different places as if they were caught they would be sent off to be killed.
"So, when it came on Thursday, I went in the direction to take a streetcar to see Kawka in Sosnoweic. I had to pass where some children were playing. They ran screaming home. A JEW! A JEW!"

Example 3 : When Vladek and his wife came to search for shelter in order to hide from the Gestapo during the night, a neighbour yelled out "A Jewess" in the courtyard and yelled to called the police. It demonstrates the risk of losing your life by just being out in the open during the night, as anyone who recognised you as a Jew could turn them into the Police to be killed, showcasing the danger of walking anywhere out in the open where someone could see you, as they could call the police to arrest them.
"A Jewess! There's a Jewess In the courtyard! POLICE! An old witch recognised Anja from her window. We ran fast to the shed and hid in the straw."

Throughout the graphic novel Spiegelman displays a semi untastful relationship between him and his father. This is due to the lack of similarities present in both indivuals and thus creates friction in understanding both father and son as a whole. Throughout Vladeks stories to Art a solution to such family uneas is further presented.

Example 1 (pg 70-71)

Art and his father are depicted having an argument this is understood through both facial expressions and the delliberat but effective text used to evoke annoyance and anger from the characters. "I threw it out"
"What ?!? you're kidding!"
"Such an old shabby coat it's a shame my son would wear such a coat!"
"But I like it"
This scene indicates that Vladek puts great emphasis on his belongings due to the effects of war and how the Jews were stripped of their greatest possessions. This is something that Art doesn't understand due to him being established in a wealthy ordinary normal family where he personally hasn't understood the true meaning of struggle.
"Look dad. You can't Do this to me. I'm over 30 years old. I choose my own Clothes!"

Example 2 (pg 174)

Art and his wife are having a conversation in the car about art's family and especially his farther. Art questions and dwells over his relationship with his farther and expresses all his intamate emotions to his wife understood through the use of close camera shots desplayed in the scene.
"Vladek sounded half-hysterical on the phone"
"Poor guy I feel so sorry for him"
"Yeah me too...'Til I have to spend any time with him then he drives me crazy!"
This shows that Art is still unable to create a perfect connection with his Dad in terms of understanding eachothers ideologies.
"I mean, I can't even make any sense out of my relationship with my farther... How am I supposed to make any sense out of Aushwitz?... of the Holocost...

(ISSY) Due to humanity being both selfless and pure evil, Spiegelman had suffered from mental health problems that led to him avoiding the truth about his Mothers' death, and how the emotions of confusion, anger and numbness clouded his thoughts as he was expected to comfort his own Father during this difficult time.

This particular idea is presented in the darkest pages of the book, known as "Prisoner On The Hell Planet", giving readers the opportunity to understand Spiegelmans' story and how humanity is both selfless and evil.

The graphic weight within this particular scene, has a unique change that helps represent Spieglemans' mind during this time, as all he would see is darkness. It includes detailed panels and indepth facial expressions that capture the readers eye and help portray the idea on how humanity is full of pure evil.

"That night was bad... My Father insisted we sleep on the floor-an old Jewish custom, I guess. He held me and moaned to himself during the night. I was uncomfortable.... We were scared!" (Page 104). This particular thought/speech within this scene shows two men comforting each other during a time of grief and trying to find themselves within the idea of selfless and pure evil and within each other too. With Spiegleman and his Father being scared, it showed that they were selfless and no longer knew what to do in a humanity where his own Mother was no longer around due to pure evil taking over her thoughts.

Artie grew up living a comfortable lifestyle with all of his necessary needs by his side. On the other hand Vladek grew up in the war. He was restricted to what he could have which forced him to adopted the attitude that in order to survive he had to depend on himself. By Arties father telling him about the war honestly it has made him have nightmares, feel guilt, have 'unnormal thoughts' such as " I used to think about which one of my parents I'd let the nazis take" and "gas coming out of the shower head".

Idea: “Our minds and our memories have the ability to imprison us”

Attitude: Art Spiegelmai’s attitude toward this idea seems to be quite negative as he draws quite harshly and uses graphic weight to add contest and emphasise this negative attitude.

Example 1:

In the comic “Prisoner on the Hell Planet” Spiegelman writes about the character leaving the mental institution. The character, who is presumably himself, is wearing a striped jumpsuit that is usually associated with prisoners. Although the character has left the institution he never changes clothes. This is symbolic of feeling trapped or imprisoned.

Example 2:
Again, in the same comic, "Prisoner on the Hell Planet" Spiegelman uses harsh and dark lines. The use of this shows that the character has a very negative and dark view of the world. The character and the characters father have very dark and swollen eyes. This is usually associated with people who are unwell. This also gives the reader an idea of the mental state of each character.

Example 3:
In "Prisoner on the Hell Planet" the character has a very distorted view of his cousin and Doctor. This could just be a hyperbole or it can represent the imprisonment of his mind as his memories continue to haunt him. His memories are again, incredibly dark which symbolises how he views the situation. Spiegelman uses a lot of depth in his drawings which adds a deeper meaning.

Example 4:
The graphic novel MAUS is a retell of Vladek Spiegelman's life during the war.

This shows the effect of the Nazis hate towards Jews had on their lives with a Jews feeling so unsafe at the thought of their life being taken away that they have no where to turn.

Example 2: “Don’t you know? ALL Jewish businesses have been taken over by ‘Aryan managers’…” (Pg. 78). The Nazis persectution of Jews extended to all areas of life. The Jews property and wealth were taken away, and they were left with few options to make a living. Vladek loses his factory and must make do with what he can earn on the black market.

Example 3: "ORDER: All Jews of Sosnowiec must be relocated into the Stara Sosnowiec quarter by January 1, 1942. Non-Jews will be moved into vacated premises.” (Pg. 84). The Nazis continue their oppression of the Jews by taking away their homes and moving them into ghettoes, small, cramped neighborhoods isolated from the rest of the town. Art's family were lucky that they received a 2 bedroom house but lived everyday in fear that they would be taken away to Auchwitz.

Expressing love towards others saves lives. This can also be connected with the idea that hate is the cause of many individuals unhappiness.

Attitude: guilt

Example 1: In the Prisoner on the Hell Planet comic, it is explained that the mother in the story, representing Art's mother, has killed herself. On page 105 an important idea is brought forward, as an upseting exchange occurs between Art and his mother as she reaches out to him searching for love and he ignorantly rejects her. It is clear that Art didn't know the effect that his dismissal would bring until his mum was gone with the comment: 'the guilt was overwhelming'. This idea that the expression of love can save lives not only applies to the loss of the mothers life, but the overwhelming guilt and memory that changed and burdens Art's life forever shown through the jail cell that represents his mental imprisonment.

Although he is not literally wearing this clothing or imprisoned, the image clearly expresses how his mind and memories of his mothers death, was able to imprison him in guilt and depression, making him feel as though he was really imprisoned.

Example 2: Art writes, 'I felt nauseous... the guilt was overwhelming!' This is expresses the extent to which the memories of his mothers death, continued to haunt him with guilt and cause him to become imprisoned in his own thoughts and memories.

Example 3: Art reflects on the last time he saw his mother, 'I remember the last time I saw her...Artie you still love me don't you? Sure, Ma....' and then proceeds with his following thoughts about the memory, 'Congratulations! You've committed the perfect crime...' This sarcastic reflection on the memory of the lack of love Art expressed towards his mother before she died, exemplifies the way this memory caused him to become imprisoned in his own guilt.
