PAHM has given me the opportunity to put decolonization in action rather than just practicing it in theory. From my experience and knowledge, I know that we honor Larry Itliong this month as well as sharing our own histories. I don't know anything about Lumads so I am open and intrigued to learn more about them and their experiences.

PAHM Represented a "comeback/reunion" for in person events focused on Filipina/o/x American experiences. Navigating through the Covid-19 pandemic we were in isolation, but it was also special seeing folks i've worked with over the years. Seeing students in-person who I've shared virtual space over the past 18 months, meeting PEP teachers and students in person, also a flood of FilAm content that were only covered in classes, but on social media: farmworkers, jelly, ben, and pogo, etc. (btw - #pepsf has been producing FilAm production for kids a decade ago: https://youtu.be/a1neZr2B1L0)

PAHM is that our history is never forgotten. PAHM does not mean it happens for one month, it's a lifestyle, it's a life long commitment. It is our decolonization process. We are rectifying our errors. It is our step-by-step organizing. Historical events from what I understand is how brainwashed our history was, it took me until the age of 19 know about the movements in the Filipinx community. I became so passionate about the work in Anakbayan last year (2020).

What are films/documentaries do you like for the class to watch about the struggle of Lumad people?

PAHM has helped me dedicate more time to being more in touch with my roots and culture. I have been able to appreciate and feel closer to those around me and also my ancestors. During PAHM, we acknowledge the first manongs that migrated over to the west and how they established the first pinoy communities. This is the first time I am hearing about the Lumads so I am open to learn and understand.

1. It's been really cool to be part of an Ethnic History studies class during PAHM. The events that I've gone to this month have either touched on or dived deep into the process of decolonization. This month, I'm grateful that I can be in spaces where I am able to learn, reflect, and engage in dialogue.
2. Gabriela Silang and Whang-Od are some important people in Pilipinx education.
3. I actually don't know that much about the Lumads besides what I've read in an Anakbayan flyer. From what I recall, it talked about how the Duterte administration has been killing Lumad teachers and students.

1. What has PAHM meant to you this month?

PAHM 2021 for me it meant "pushing forward towards a collective liberation"
A lot of themes popped up for me. It was representation, activism, mental health, academic success, migrant/immigrant justice, creativity, and challenging imperialism. And although I believe PAHM should be every month, I am glad we have a month to unite together and do activities that show our collective/dynamic identities and goals towards liberation in the Philippines and the United States.

2. From your experience and knowledge, what historical events and highlights do you know are covered during Pilipinx-American histxry month.

it was always about our veterans and farm workers. Which I love, but i know now there is so much more!

3. What are questions you have about Lumads that we can answer todaye

PAHM has provided me this sense of community and passion of all sharing the same goals in wanting to create progression from our history. From previous knowledge, I am aware we honor those first Filipinos who have migrated to what's known as Morro Bay. I've never really heard about Lumads till now so I'm willing to learn and hear all about it.

To be honest I felt like the past few months have been Filipino American history month ever since I’ve been taking this class. Within this class and PAHM overall I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to be able to learn about my culture and has helped with finding my identity. My great grandmother recently passed away at the end of September so I’ve taken the time this month to acknowledge and appreciate the stories from my grandma & learn more about my family and culture. I felt like there was a huge part of my identity that was missing and I feel like that was due to the lack of resources I knew about that could help teach me about my culture.

Since taking this class, PAHM has become a bigger deal for me. I’ve always been very proud to be Filipina- to the point where I felt like I was finally “found” in middle school. I met a lot of other Filipinos then and wanted to be friends with all of the Filipinos at that age. Especially because I had no idea about being a Filipina in elementary school.

From my experience and knowledge, the historical events and highlights covered during PAHM month are about the Filipinos that fought in the American war against Spain and Japan.

I’d love to learn everything about Lumads and other indegenous tribes in the Philippines.
