Sustainable goals that align with this weather unit are goal 6 – clean water and sanitation, and goal 13 – climate action. In 5^th grade, we focus on the water cycle and the importance of protecting our limited sources of freshwater. There is a shortage of clean, freshwater that globally impacts the health and wellbeing of people in other parts of the world. There is also alignment with climate action. Students are introduced to climate patterns in 5^th grade, but climate change as a global issue is not expressly written into the 5^th grade standards. We really dig deeper into climate change in 7^th grade. Still, 5^th graders are old enough to understand patterns in climate and learn how our climate has changed over the past decades, while being introduced to the human impact on climate change.
