The Diffusion of Innovation

In Week 3, we learned about Everett Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation. I found this interesting, as I had never given thought to the process in which people adopt new ideas. I found that I would fall within the "Early Adopters" category, as I tend to attempt to find and utilize new ideas. My coworkers often come to me when they have a question about a new strategy or teaching tool as well.

I found Knowles' principles especially interesting, as I realized that I implement several of these in my lesson planning. However, I had never heard of him before taking this course. While I do implement problem-orientation and experience, I hadn't heard of his principle, "Self-Concept". I think it's incredibly important for learners to see the importance of their learning, and to take ownership and responsibility for it. By incorporating self-concept, learners will independently gain new information.

In Week 8, we learned about various principles that support learning through multimedia. This module resonated with me as a language teacher, as I rely heavily on text and visuals in order to maintain the target language in class. In completing this module, I was able to take away some principles, such as the Coherence and Segmenting Principles, for my own classroom.
Image resource: https://elearningbrothers.com/bite-size-elearning-segmenting-principle/

However, I hadn't realized how valuable this tool can be for my own professional development.
It is a wonderful way to communicate and connect with other teachers and learners, and my experience with #edtechchat proved to be valuable. This is something I am looking forward to exploring in the future.

A goal of mine is to plan lessons in which students are able to work at their own speed. Whenever implementing technology in the classroom, it is always difficult for me, as there are students that feel comfortable right away, while others struggle through the instructions I have given them.
In the process of creating my learning module for my District Technology Training Plan, I had utilized principles gathered from the multimedia principle to create a tutorial video for Google Maps. I found that it was successful, and this is something that I would like to utilize more often in my classroom. I believe that this would allow my students to work independently, and for me to help those that need extra help.

I found the module for this outcome to be especially interesting, as I found that many of the principles of adult learning coincided with my own ideas as a high school teacher. For example, Knowles' "Need to Know" is a principle that I implement on a daily basis with my own students.
During this semester, I implemented the principles in my District Technology Training Plan. For example, I attempted to connect participants' past experiences with their current learning in training days.

For example, with my tutorial in Google Maps, I made sure to segment the information, and used VoiceThread in order to do so.

We have covered so many new concepts and strategies, and I feel that I have grown as a technology specialist and educator. While I have already started to implement the content we've covered in the classes I teach, as stated in my reflection, I do not imagine that I will be planning a large professional development anytime soon. Despite this, I could possibly use the knowledge I've gained to present to my own department, or small groups at my school.
