"This is a valley of ashes---- a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens" (Fitzgerald 23)

In this quote, Nick is talking about this smaller, less fortunate and dirtier town, The Valley Of Ashes. Stating that this town is so dirty that ashes grow like wheat. This valley has been polluted because of the rising smokes and chimneys. This location plays a significant part in the story because this location is where Tom mistress is living and where something bad happens to her later on in the story.

"After a moment the proprietor emerged from the interior of his establishment and gazed hollowed-eyed at the car." (Fitzgerald, 122)

This quote relates to the Valley of Ashes because at the time, Tom was stopping by to get gas at George's mechanic shop. At this time, we find out that George is sick and is too weak to do anything because he found out that his wife, Myrtle, has been having a secret affair. He found a pearl necklace that Myrtle owned that they could never afford.

George relates the most to the valley of ashes. He not only lives there as a car mechanic, but is also miserable and torn when he finds out his wife is cheating on him with Tom. He is described as sick looking and pale when Tom drives to his shop when racing Gatsby. His life falls apart even more when Gatsby accidentally kills his wife. His life seems to burn away and turn into ash.

The fight with Tom, Gatsby, and Daisy represents the valley of ashes because it is the fire that was started by Tom cheating and Gatsby trying to persuade Daisy to leave Tom. After the argument ends and Daisy decides to stay with Tom, all that remains is a pile of ash from the love that Daisy had for Gatsby.

The theme that best relates to the valley of ashes is "class differences" because in the story they describe the valley of ashes as a place that's dirtier and not that fancy compared to West/East egg and the City (New York). With saying that it would make sense for Myrtle and George who are not as wealthy as Gatsby or Tom and Daisy to stay in this area. Class differences also relate to this topic because valley of ashes is a little known to be a poorer area than lets say East egg, where Tom and Daisy lived lashley.
It is hard to imagine that someone so wealthy as Gatsby, to be living in the valley of ashes, since it is much dirtier and less fortunate. However there is nothing wrong with the valley of ashes, it is just harder to make a living in the valley of ashes.
Also the wealthier side has bigger and better houses, where is Myrtle and George live in the shop they work and own.
