It means holding this awareness within the ongoing learning and unlearning we must do around the historical and structural dominances present within our institution. It calls for creating space in our institutions and workplaces for interrogation, dialogue and reflection on these realities, so we can nurture healing, joyful and generative spaces for interconnection.

Trauma informed means considering how we can create psychologically safe spaces, policies, practices, systems and cultures so that everyone has access to their hopes, dreams, and potential. It means decolonizing our own mindsets, acknowledging how our own power and privilege might be creating unsafe, oppressive environments for historically, persistently marginalized groups based on social/cultural identity (race, gender, ability, class, age, etc). It means sitting in our own discomfort in order to create equitable and safe spaces for others.

Where we avoid judgement and assumptions of an individuals past and present challenges, and maintain an open and understanding outlook and presence, eventually creating and maintaining a safe and supportive environment for those around us, should they need it. All in all, being mindful of the known and unknown challenges others face, and holding empathy towards them.

Listening to all different types of view and perceptions about trauma-informed makes me feel very emotional, calm and comforted at the same time. What really stood out to me was when someone said that " what trauma inform should feel like in workplace is making people feel safe and supported by giving them what they needed to succeed. Instead of asking what happened, one should ask what do you need? How can we help".

Trauma is a lens that shapes one's perspective. Being trauma-informed is understanding how that lens may affect interactions and reactions as we navigate daily life with others with their own lived experience of challenges and adversity.

Being trauma-informed means making space for people to be themselves. Listening to understand, not to respond. Understanding that trauma presents differently for everyone. And some days are better than others. It means not asking what someone is 'sick' with if they aren't able to attend work. It means understanding that everyone copes differently and everyone has a unique lived experience.

This raises really important questions about emotional labour as well, especially when you bring it into conversation with the impacts of structural violence and intersections of race, gender and sexuality.
