My family is originally from South America, Chile. I was taught how to speak Spanish first and late on learned English so sometimes it can be tricky. The image above is the flag, it represents my home flag though I wasn't born there I was taught about where my family was from.

Plaza de Armas of Los Angeles

My parents are from two different parts but met in Los Angeles, Chile. I have recently visited and I am reminded of how different it is from Canada. This image is one of the plazas they have in Chile, I have been to and this is the one I seem to visit the most when I'm there. It reminds me of how beautiful it is, but it also reminds me of how you can see the difference, you see more people on the streets, you can see the difference in financial status compared to here in Canada.

This is song in english is called The right to Live in Peace, not many people get to have that right with all the political things going on. This is the newer version including different artist, this song was sang by a Chilean artist and it is about the way wars have impacted the world, how hatred has cost the lives of many. Here in Canada we have the right to express ourselves, in Chile we have more taboo things, student aren't even able to dye their hair.

We have been taught that in order to be a good social worker you need to have things that ground you, a way to remember what made you want to go into the helping profession. Values are something you learn along the way and can change along the way

My brothers are younger than me but have taught me a lot about patience. They have taught me how to laugh when it comes to problems that come up, they annoy me to no end but I love and respect them as individuals.

I believe that in order to be a good social worker you need to have some compassion. I was taught to respect others and to listen to their stories if they're willing to share.

Honesty

Honesty is something that I believe is important and I consider it to be one of my values, I do believe there is a time and place. It is harder to tell the truth than it is to tell a lie, I've never been a good liar.

Growth

Everyday you learn something, it can be something simple like leaning how to use Microsoft or something more complicated about yourself. Growth is so important as it reminds you that you're never done learning, and it can be difficult to admit as humans like to believe we do know it all.

Friendship

One of my closest friends, has had one of the biggest hearts I've ever seen. She has taught me how to keep an open mind and how to share parts of me without judgement, she is willing to hear my stories and offer me advice when I struggle. She reminds me to treat myself with kindness.

I grew up as the eldest and only daughter, I was taught to be independent, a caregiver, someone that others can rely on. Thankfully my mother help break some of the traditional things she was taught growing up as a young woman. She was the one that taught me how to manage my finances, how to cook, and how important it is to find someone who will support you not bring you down.

My father taught me how important it is to stop and listen, he taught me that sometimes in order to be hear you need to speak softly. We forget that in order to get through a problem we need to be willing to listen to the other person, and truly understand what they have to say. He's taught me that it's ok to go out and have fun.

This lovely individual is someone I met at work, she taught me how to make the most out of moments. I have made some wonderful connections that are always teaching me new things, she's taught me that even when things don't go your way make the most of it and not to let anyone make me feel uncomfortable.

Who I want to be

This photo is of me and my dog last year taking a walk and trying to take photos. I am not the same person I was last year, and that's ok. I took some time to grow and branch out, not only that but I have started to put myself out there. I want to be a better version of myself, I want to educated myself to be better.

The Social Worker I hope to be

The helping profession itself is difficult, they are underfunded and are prone to burnout. I hope to be an individual who is able to help those around her, I want to learn how to be ok with things that will make me uncomfortable, ask myself questions and be able tot self reflect. I would like to connect to the community as well as give a voice to those who have had it taken away.
