How to Reduce your Carbon Footprint Pt 1 -Travel

One effective way that I can reduce my carbon footprint that is convenient to me is to remove excess weight from mt parents' cars. This is more convenient for me than public transportation and cycling everywhere because 1. there isn't really any types of public transportation in this area that I can take, (other than school buses) and 2. Every business, store, restaurant, etc. is way too far away for me and my family to ride bikes to. So the most useful way to decrease my footprint would be to reduce the weight in my families' cars in order to improve fuel efficiency.

Another way that I can improve my carbon footprint is to replace the current light bulbs that I use with energy-efficient light bulbs. An example of a light bulb I could use could be CFL lights. These lights are compressed flourescent lights, and even though they may cost a bit more than a regular incandescant light, but its lifespan is almost 7,000 more hours. So in the long run, CFL lights will actually end up costing less because you will need to purchase less. With these bulbs, I would be saving 80% more power, and I wouldn't need to change the lights as often.

One last way that I can reduce my carbon emissions is by decreasing the amount of clothes I purchase. Instead of buying cheap clothes over and over again, buy a few expensive, well made outfits and stick with those instead. Doing this will not only cut down the transport and carbon costs, and less clothes being transported means less trucks on the road and less emissions. It also can help stop the waste of resources when the clothing is being manufactured. And while it helps with cutting carbon emissions, it also is a way to treat yourself.

This person is in a family with two other people. He/she spends little money on products, while my family of four spends lots on clothes, health products, and eating out. Like me, this person recycles. I do not use public transportation, but this person does. He/she keeps the house cool in Winters and warm in Summers, while my house is pretty much the opposite. While this person flies once a year for a short time, I do not. He/she lives in a small two bedroom apartment, whereas I live in a detached house. The difference in lifestyles explains why my footprint is larger than this person's.

This person is in a family of five, living in a one bedroom apartment. My living style is much larger and I am in a family of four. They are vegetarian, waste no food at all, and recycle everything. I occasionally waste food, I do recycle as much as I can, but I am not vegetarian at all. They spend little to no money on outside products, while I spend lots on clothing, beauty and health products, and restaurants. They also have a solar panel, but I do not have any solar-powered items in my home. He/she walks or bikes everywhere, where I ride in a car. My home is kept slightly warmer in winters and cooler in summers, whereas their home is the complete opposite. These vastly different living situations are the reasons as to why this person is much more eco and carbon friendly than I am.
