The purpose of the First Crusade was to unite Europe and Pope Urban II did this by delivering a famous speech at the Council of Clermont. He wanted Christians to capture Jerusalem.(Green and France)

Pope Urban II's speech was meant for the knightly class but the peasant responded more then the knights responded.  This crusade appealed to many different classes of society.
