During morning snack, I sat beside A. She looked up at me with wide eyes and burst into tears. The ECEs told me that A. had just come back from a vacation and was a bit disoriented at the center. They told me that it might be best for me to sit beside a different child for that meal. I moved to sit next to another child.

Another ECE and I were getting the children dressed to go to the playground for outdoor play. I had a tough time helping them put on their winter clothes, since I hadn't had any experience doing it before. I spoke very little to the children while assisting them. I mostly focused on trying to get them ready. The children didn't look at me very much and would get distracted by things around them.

A.C. brought a book up to me and asked me to read to him. I took the book and sat on the carpet. He sat in my lap and I opened the book and started to read. I didn't know what questions to ask or how to talk to him while reading the book. A.C. soon stood up and went back to the bookshelf. He picked another book and sat down with it.

I came in after my break to the children having their lunch. More than five different children looked at me and said, "Maria!" Some of them started waving at me and laughing. I waved by and said "hi, guys!"

After lunch time, the children were slowly getting up, one by one, to go wash their hands. Another student was helping them get washed. When it was time for A. to go wash her hands, she was protesting against the student. "No!" she said, squirming away. "Would you like Maria to help you wash your hands?" the student asked A. "Yes!" A. smiled and followed me to the sink.

When getting the children ready for outdoor play, I always speak to the child while helping them now. I asked K.D. to help me by pushing his foot through his snow pants and he did. Then I asked him to show me how he can put on his jacket and he tried. Sometimes he repeated what I said. "Which gloves do you want, K?" I asked. "Which gloves, K?" he said smiling. When I asked him to do something, he listened. "Put your hand out for your glove!" I said. K.D. put his hand out.

A.C. chose a book and brought it up to me. "Read it!" he said. "Oh, you want me to read you this book, A?" I asked. He nodded. I sat down with A.C. The book was about cats and each page had different textures, corresponding with the story for the reader to feel. After reading each page, I offered the book to A.C. for him to touch the materials which asking him questions like, "how does that feel?" or "is it soft or rough, A?" He responded with "soft!" to the yarn on the page. I continued asking similar questions throughout the story.

I (M.T-C.) was doing an activity with the children and taking some pictures as they worked. A. watched me with fascination. "Let me see!" she said. "You want to see your picture?" I asked. I showed her the last picture I took of her. She stared at the picture for a while. "Again!" she smiled. "Okay!" I said and took another picture. I showed her it again and she smiled.
