SU: Teacher Mentoring Teacher Exit Ticket 6 by Jessica Williams

By Wednesday, reflect on the Padlet on some crucial conversations you have had? How might you change them if you could go back to incorporate some mentoring language or even different body language to change the outcome of the situation? How will you use this lesson moving forward in your work as a mentor? Then, thoughtfully comment by Friday on a minimum of two class members' responses.

Conversation- Jon Frykman

At the end of last year our school was going through some big changes, and I had a couple conversations with people about this. I wanted to give my input about our current situation but didn't want to just speak to one person, so I waited to talk to our group of teachers. There were a few that spoke to the group, but not many so I felt proud of talking finally. What happened though was I let my emotions take over during my talk. I so badly wanted my information to get out, I lost track of what a regular conversation is like. So what happened was I just talked to try to prove my point and what I should have done is thought of the group like talking to one person. I need to slow down when in big groups and just explain my thoughts and try to explain using analogies. So the outcome was good but I feel some remorse after the fact about not explaining everything at that point. But people could ask me clarifying questions if they don't know.......

Jon Frykman- Language and outcomes

If I am more engaged with the other people in the group I could have used the current topic to explain my point. I could have asked a clarifying question to the group. I should think about my confidence and body language during all staff meetings. I need to show some language, like smiling not in a snarky way but the video talked about smiling to look confident. Slow down, and be in the moment will help with clarity. Even if the matter is serious it is ok to have humor. It would be good to try to find some humor to bring the group together. I picked a difficult conversation but that is what I need to get better at.

Here is what I see moving forward
- I am going to print out the coaching stems and have that up so I can see that every day. I need to remember how to word my conversations and how to word my questions in a non judgmental way
-I am going to find time during the day to lower my stress level. I am going to continue to read during our 3- 5 minute break.
-I am going to ask better questions during conversations
-I am going to make a list of problems and then rate the ones I can have an effect on
-I am going to try to listen to two audio books on motivation, building community, or self help.
-I will continue to learn new technology, teaching methods to help build community, and read just to learn something new

Crucial Conversation

There are several but one of the hardest I've had to have was with a co-worker in a different department. It was budget cut time and she was told she was being moved to a different grade level in a different building. This person strongly felt I should have been the one who should have moved and the situation turned ugly pretty fast. To focus on the crucial conversation however, after several hard days both of us got pulled into speak with our principal. He made it very clear why he made the decision he did but she still felt the need to fight it. I felt like a sitting duck, then eventually got my turn to speak. I had to look at her and told her I understand her being upset about having to make a big move but then had to explain how it was affecting me. I somehow held it together in the conference room that day and it went as well as it could have (from my perspective) but after I left I fell apart.

Mentoring language

I know some of this mentoring language could have helped me immensely in the situation I was in. :) Live and learn! Not that I was mentoring her, but to talk through this change with her in a professional tone with no emotions attached. I know I would have used the line "What I hear you saying.." and other paraphrasing to give her the validation I know she was looking for. There would have been some clarifying questioning and possibly suggestions.

As far as mentoring language goes, it comes down to making it a habit. Through experience and time, mentoring language will hopefully become a part of my fluent professional life (even personal life). To validate people and build relationships will benefit my experiences in many aspects. To become fluent, I have the NTC Toolbox page bookmarked and plan on referring back to that often. I also have several copies of the stems printed out and have intended places on where to stick them for easy access in my classroom. Then to get experience, I need to go out there and be willing to take on a mentee, a student teacher, etc. to allow those experiences for myself and open up opportunities. I am looking forward to it!
