Review - Negative

I found this book incredibly interesting, but also off-putting at the same time. I realize this book was most likely tailored to the college crowd, but I feel as if he went over the top when trying to relate himself. I felt as if his metaphors and examples were far-reaching and most of the time didn't have a clear introduction, he just starts talking most of the time.

The content of the book, through most of the chapters, I enjoyed thoroughly. With this book, I've learned to appreciate the little things the artist does. I've learned to pick out different techniques, and place more emphasis on the "unspoken words" of the music.

Favorite Chapter

My favorite chapter was Chapter 5 - Quiet/Silence/Intimacy. I like this chapter because it made me appreciate "minimalist" music much more, when before i disliked it. But it also made one of my favorite songs of all time become so much more meaningful. "Runaway" by Kanye West is a song about how he's telling the girl of his dreams to run away from him, because he's a bad guy. The musical elements that are present throughout the entire 9 minute piece are 2 piano keys, that I've learned with the help of this chapter, are incredibly powerful. It's a simple beat, but the content of the song is exemplified by the piano keys that encompass his sadness

In this song, chapter 5 made me appreciate this song so much more. Ratliff says on page 51, "You realize the power of a short silence when you hear it in a song."

This chapter was also a very interesting one for me. The idea of perfection is always an opinion, but there are some pieces in music where you truly believe nothing would fit better than that one element.I agree with this, because there are a few songs where you feel as if a sound was created just for that musician's piece. On page 228, Ratliff explains it as, "A perfect moment is often wordless, or indirect if it has words. It is the song blushing: an unplanned or perhaps only semiplanned occurrence.
