Most audiologists study undergraduate courses in audiology to achieve a graduate degree from an institution that is certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. An undergraduate degree in audiology is not required as long as prerequisite courses are fulfilled. Education to become an audiologist can take up to 5-6 years to complete. Different states then have different programs to license audiologists to practice.

Licensure varies by state, although a large portion of states require degrees from ASHA certified programs. State-required licensure completion allows the audiologist to practice in that state. Audiologists are not required to have a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology or certified by a program by the American Board of Audiology, although, some employers can require it, so it is suggested for audiologists for better job placement.
