~ The Taupo eruption destroyed the lush forests that used to grow in Rangipo desert.
~ Plants should have returned, but because there is INTERACTION between climate, soil and vegetation, only Tussock Grasses grow.
~ The climate is severe - making it hard for most plants to cope.
~ There is little moisture in the soil due to the climate's rain shadow, and the westerly winds winds whip through the Tama Saddle and constantly erode the surface.
~ Therefore, because most vegetation have certain
needs when interacting with the soil and climate - only Tussock Grasses can survive in Rangipo Desert

~ Different plants are suited to different climates and soil needs
~ Because of this, and climates become more severe, and soil less rich - plant species also change as altitude increases
~ For example, due to INTERACTION the species at lower altitudes such as mixed forest, and beech forest - require moderate climates, and rich soils. The climate influences the vegetation, and the soil and vegetation influence each other, as the PROCESS of decomposition makes the soils rich from dying plants, and the living plants benefit from the rich soil.
~ As altitude increases, the plants require less nutrients, and are hardier and well adapted to serving in extreme conditions.
~ This is known as PLANT SUCCESSION.
